Stabs 3
Had two that were shit on rats, if you mean Bull Terriers that is. Had two Staffs that I worked on them too, and they were also shit. Quote Link to post
RossM 8,119
my mate had a staffie that wasnt bad on them, grab, crunch and onto the next one, wasnt as good as the terriers but caught his fair share. Quote Link to post
Attack Fell Terrier 864
It'd be like using a sledge hammer to bang a tack in, still I wouldn't deny any dog a bit of pest control if it wanted it. I wouldn't buy a Bull Terrier specifically to Rat, but if you have one already then why not give it a try? You never know it may take to it well. Quote Link to post
hedz31 1,308
Ive never done much ratting with terriers i always prefered earth work,so perhaps the best ratting dog i ever had was in fact an apbt called billy he was a big red brute lovley natured fantastic with dogs and kids but he was a total demon with rats he would smash his way into anything to get them, my parents have a small holding and next to them is a pheasent farm and i used to walk him with the other dogs around there and he caught hundreds in his life and i did take him on a few occasions with a group of lads that had a medium sized pack of terriers and he held his own rather well with them and on some occasions was quicker than them he never even shook them it was crunch onto the next one. gazzer 1
a few folk down here in the southwest use staffs as part of a ratting pack,to good effect too.they basically work alongside the terriers, the gang i go with have a mix of russels, patts whippet x and i have a plummer, the staffy is used as a kind of bulldozer,we rat some rough farm buildings where there is lots of old pallets, corrugated steel sheets, and general debris and rubble, the staff waits while the terriers mark,if the terriers cant get instant access,in goes the staff and drags all the crap out the way and in go the terriers, the staff will take his share of quarry albeit not as much as the others but it all works well,we just keep him back while we smoke them out with the chainsaw engine and when the rats come out slip him off.......2 of my friends use them, personally i dont like the breed, one has caused bother fighting with the terriers but was eaten by the gamekeepers alsation (gaurd dog on the farm)....the other was not so much of a problem.......i wouldnt say they are good ratters but can definately serve a purpose, and its better to work a dog rather than it be sat at home getting fat n lazy. Had two Staffs that I worked on them too, and they were also shit. shit in what way?carried them around etc? Ate them. I used to rat a bit on my job and the staffs got a lot of work but although they caught their fair share, they couldn't hold a candle to the terriers when it came to ratting. I could put loads of pics up and back up a spurious claim that they were good ratters, but they weren't really. Quote Link to post

Bet that used to end in a few squabbles!...my old Staff was/is keen as mustard for rats for some reason they make him dribble and drool like mad! they was only thing he could catch he didnt eat...he used to pull some big fuckers out of the sugar beet heaps...would agree nowhere near as quick an sharp on em as the terriers same as bushing rabbits Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
All of the above is mainly correct, especially Stabs. I owned a EBT as a kid, went everywhere, hunted everything. Rats were it's fun, it loved 'em! Marked as good as anythin, dug like a feind, took pain like it wern't there BUT.... It was a EBT ( a fit one, granted), compare it to a working terrier and it was a none starter! You can read all you want about days gone by and the utimate rat dogs but the truth is, that they have long had their day. All that said and what I will say, is that todays Bull Terrier, no matter what type, can give you more fun watching it's efforts than a half dozen good ratting terriers.... Go on, if ya got one, tune it in, give it a go, it'll love it and i'll bet you will too.... Edited February 5, 2010 by Bosun11 Quote Link to post

Dead right Bosun, had hours of fun with the buggers and you do get a certain sense of achievement when you actually get something with them. Quote Link to post
