Mine are very well mannered and learn very quick i find they mature quicker than bullxs as well thats one thing i noticed straight away when i started with wheaten crosses instead of bull although i do prefer the bullx coats on a dog my wheaten bitchs coat takes alot of brushing etc or it gets clogged up with alsorts my wheaten/bull/greyhound has a cracking coat very short tight rough coat far better than the wheaten/greyhound coat

yeah i think they're easier to train than a bull x as they pick up things quicker in my experience and have a better hunting instinct. i might be biased but think the wheaton x is more obedient but sometimes have problems with other dogs if not socialised from a very early age with other dogs.

bullx's are more powerful in the jaw and stronger generally but i prefer wheatons as allrounder's but thats just my personal preference and you speak as you find

A good interesting thread people. I'm not normaly a fan of the smaller lurcher but I have had my mind changed this season by a 3/4 Whippet (Laguna) 1/4 Wheaten. He is 22", brindled smooth coat, a lovely natured dog with People and dogs. He has a nose to die for, if theres out there he will find it and up till now I have never known the wind, rain or cold bother him. He is as obedient as most other lurchers i have seen. He is very good at the ferreting job. I hear he is not bad at tracking Roe! My biggest shock was how quick he can retrieve foxes with very little fuss. A cracking little dog. Regards warren

I was sent over a true working wheaten pup from Ireland, a mating from the Peter Sinead of all Ireland line, crossed with the Teago line. Even as a pup very powerful animal. The Wheatens in the 1930's were used in field trials, and are very easy to train. As game as any dog, and i'd say perfect for a lurcher line, working bigger stuff if need be. I do think somewhere in the past, bull was introduced, but the wheaten has a powerful head anyway. I was warned to give the dog plenty exercise, and build a brick kennel. How right they were if the dog got bored. I had to send this dog back to Ireland, as it was a bit unsteady, and "turned" twice after another dog made a run at it. I held the wheaten back or that other dog would not have walked away, i'm sure of that. I also have kids around here, and could not take the chance of this dog getting out. Saying all that, another pup from the same litter went to my father in law, and you could not get a more calm and settled dog.I had not actually asked for the pup it was just sent over as a gift. I'd happily have a cross, but a pure working line is something different. When it was all legal my mate in ireland worked the wheatens to everything, and says no more game dog than those.

Very nice Lurcher you have there, by the way. I am sure it will do all you ask of it, and more.
