Bigshrimp 5
What would you reccomend as the best allround cross for the quarry we have in North America: -Rabbits (daytime only as lamping rabbit is illegal where I am) -Bolted/drawing ground quarry (groundhog, raccoon, oppossum and fox) -Coyote -Raccoon at night I think the Coyote will be the dealbreaker so if it's too much to give me a cross including Coyote then give me your best suggestion if we assume Coyote will not be run. Bigshrimp 5
BTW, pictures of the cross you recommend is always appreciated Quote Link to post
Bigshrimp 5
No thoughts on a useful cross for these types of quarry and hunting?? Quote Link to post
hedz31 1,308
Never hunted the quarry you have put up pal so couldnt say for sure, but from what i am told about coyote and for drawing etc i would say something with bull in the bloodline i think my choice would be a bull/greyhound x deerhound/greyhound or a strong 5/8 greyhound 3/8 bull or a wheaten/bull/greyhound Quote Link to post

Dan Edwards 1,134
If you are not planning on running coyote then I would go with a bull x stag. If you are planning on running coyote, you better stick to the staghound blood. An 1/8th bulldog wont hurt ya though. A half cross bullstag is the ultimate though for having fun with I would think. Bigshrimp 5
Thanks so much for the responses. Are the bull x very good at rabbit (as this will be the majority of their work). Dan, same question: are stags able to catch enough rabbits to make it worthwhile running them on rabbits alot of the time?? I would like to use the same dog for the other quarry I listed above but rabbits will be primary. Quote Link to post
Dan Edwards 1,134
There are all kinds of different "staghounds" or american running dogs. There are coyote dogs, fox dogs, jackrabbit dogs, and cotton tail dogs. Just go to a guy that runs nothin but rabbits if thats what you want. My stags catch rabbits easy but they eat em way before I could ever get to em. Quote Link to post
Bigshrimp 5
There's no one around here who runs stags that I know of...only scent hounds (coonhounds, etc.). They may be around but I don't know of them. Not common to see running dogs in the east (not from my experience anyways). I'm sure most american running dog hunters are not on the net...what's the best way to find out the available dogs out there?? Quote Link to post
Dan Edwards 1,134
Just keep lookin and you'll find some. Quote Link to post
