pike on the fens

Recommended Posts

my self and son in law had a day out on the fens Saturday, set off from cold and damp Wolverhampton at 6am temp of -4c.arrived at the chosen drain at 8.30am,A Good walk for my self from the car (still recovering from a rta) 20 mins later the first baits where on the hooks a lamprey and a piece of eel on mine.bivvy set up and kettle on while we set the next pair of rods,a lamprey and a small zander on my other one (amazing whats in the frozen pike packs),

sat and made a cupper while my back was turned the slow clicking of the bait runner could be heard on the 1st rod i got up a feat in its self and made the 4 foot journey in just under 2 mins it seemed, not bad for a fat chap who was told he may never walk again last june !

strike and in to my first fish of 2010,a nice bit of sport and played a lump of a pike into the waiting landing net held by the sil, its a bit of a steepish drop of 8 or so foot.

the trace was just hooked on by 1 treble so nice and quick to come out, weighed before she went back a nice respectful 14 pound

the sil set up a spinning rod and though the day had 5 on a cheap and cheer full 50p lure just goes to show fishing can still be a poor mans sport.he had fish 2 pound up to 10 on that lure (all hail the poundland) but nothing on the dead baits

about 2ish the second rod of mine ran like mad a pissed off pike took off like a rocket as i played her to the net , on the unhooking mat and sorted out before releasing back, a few clear leach looking parasites on her flanks

a few cuppers and a bacon sarnie later its getting time to go home, light fading and ice reforming on the edges and banks

in all not a bad days sport of my 1st time on the waters of the fens a pic or 2 next
