inan 841
I do like to see a good long course, but then again i like a dog that picks them up quick had both types I'm with you ,but I prefer a dog that runs,"within itself".I have a "goal keeper", now retired ,but I found it fascinating to watch him push his quarry away from hedges ect. I do think its a bit of a fallacy that all predominantly saluki blooded dogs are plodders, most are quick enough ,when they need to be,ideally you want a dog with a few gears.Ive never had a top dog,but I have seen enough to appreciate them and both running styles the "up and at em quick striker", and the" settle in behind opportunist" "the boxer" ,who bides its time, never going for it till it has lined up its prey. Some call it watching paint dry,to me it is as good as sex. Well, allmost. Quote Link to post

winter hare 2
fast dogs for fields plodders for fen.if you get on a good hare you will need the stayer. Quote Link to post
the colonel 83
fast dogs for fields plodders for fen.if you get on a good hare you will need the stayer. don't think speed is too important, what is more relevant is determination, gameness, the prey drive etc. some dogs will chase for the fun of it without having the good mouth needed to catch at all. just my oppinion! mush 204
Trisha there aren't many hares down here anyway but before the ban most of the best hare catchers have been saluki bred and that goes for lamping rabbits to. A good saluki cross only runs as fast as it needs to like a hare, if the fields are small its going to put the speed on when needed if its any good. Edited February 4, 2010 by mush Quote Link to post

At last a bit of sense, I expect my dog to catch in small and big fields, they are not stupid and as Mush said they'll put the speed in if needed. Quote Link to post
