Fox Hunting Rifle

Recommended Posts

As most people have said spend as much as you can on the scope as i have learned as i had a £200 scope to start with and 3years later im now buying another more expensive sight as the last is not as good as it was at first. But remember get what suits you and the gun best and your wallet.

Yes I saw the review and liked the sound of it. Again, I thought the Newark show would give me a good opportunity to try some various makes out for size as have held Remmington X-bolt and found it to be really 'toy-like' when compared to the Tikka T3.

Ive got a Remmington 700 sps in .223 its a great gun ive had it for just over 3 years and its stood up to all weathers and terrain i now have a Timney trigger on it aswell which improves it alot as the standard triggers can be quite hard at around 4-5lb on some.I picked mine up for £800 including a silencer on it all new and ready,But as you say the Tikka is a great rifle too, both worth a look.

I've just got my variation for a .223 as well - The guys are quite right about making sure the glass is good but you don't have to spend a fortune - There are some very good optics out there like Meopta which don't cost the earth but are bloody good glass.

Try having a chat with Rhino Rifles

When i was last there they had a very nice remmy semi custom .223 for £950 i think

If you tell them what you want then im sure they can sort you something out for less than that though.

BUT

If i was you i wouldnt look far past a Howa heavy barrel .223. About half your rifle budget and then get a second hand leupold or zeiss conquiest for ~£500 maybe less.

That will run you to just over 2/3rds of your budget and you can either hide that away for future use or you could have the whole thing bedded etc

Thanks for that Dan. I've spent ages looking on the internet now and there are some good deals to be had for both rifle and scope. I will also need mounts, moderator etc so it soon eats into my budget. It's onlt 2 weeks from the show now so going to take my cash there and see what bargains can be had! I like the look of Meopta scopes as they seem well made and slightly cheaper than Zeiss, S&B etc. Probably go for a fixed scope such as 7x56 or 8x56.

Thanks for all the advice so far guys...much appreciated.

The Meopta Artemis is a great lamping scope particularly with reticule 4. The sight picture is as clear as S & B no question. For the money they are sh!t hot. They are going up in price though because of the euro. The T3 is a great rifle but whatever you decide stick a mod on it. Happy hunting

I have recently been authorised to have a .223 for fox hunting and have about £1000 to spend on the rifle and about £500 on scope. I'm going to the Newark shooting show at the end of the month so can anyone recommend a suitable rifle please? I am considering Sako, Mauser and Remmington amongst others.

Frankly I don't see anything wrong with that budget, yes, good optics are worth it in the long term but there are PLENTY of good optics to be had around £500, and £1000 on a gun will give a very good choice.

As others have said, are you considering the likes of a moderator, bipod etc etc, worth considering!!!

My only "personal" suggestion would be ..DON'T get a heavy rifle if you intend trekking around far with it.
