Guest 2GOOD
What would you concider a resonable distance to expect your dog to work the light ,and why. Quote Link to post
Guest 2GOOD
this must be a very hard question to answer ,or you only work your dogs in the day . Quote Link to post
Wxm 1,638
IMO theres only 1 answer ..... if you can lamp 500yrds and the dog can catch the given quarry then thats the distance. it would all deppend on the dog. some dogs may not be able to cover x amount of ground and still catch its quarry, like i say it will differ from dog to dog Quote Link to post
nighteyes 275
all depends on the conditions weather wise, rough night get on them ,still night long slips Quote Link to post
all.rounder 3
it depends on the dog.and if the rabbits are lamp shy.as you know if their shy its longer slips.if you can walk up to them all the better.i would say 30 or 40 yards.all tho i have sent my dog the full length of a field cos she spotted one and their wasn't much about. TOMO 26,184
500 yards aint far is that you mark ? waiting for me to bite 500 yard is an incredible distance and in all honesty seeing small quarry at that distance by iether dog or man at night is some feat this is another one of those things lurcher men exagerate on, a bit like the length of time a course runs Quote Link to post
foxy1983 3
if its close enough for the dog to see the dog will chase it Quote Link to post
bobhunter 1
i try and let my dogs go about hundred yards on rabbits but pre ban charlie ive let them go from quite a good distance Quote Link to post
scotty2306 37
my dog wont run down the beam that far it will walk until it knows its in distance of catching the bunny, some people dont like this but in my eyes it saves using up energy for no reason if the bunny was to get away.it will run other game (shot&retrieved) from long distances though Quote Link to post
Guest 2GOOD
old dogs ,this game could never survive with out us . the end of the beam ,only those that realy know the game would venture that far Quote Link to post
mush 204
Like you say chalky end of the beam,IMO a dog should run out fast to the end of the beam even if it cant see what you can see. you will loses loads if their slow down the beam. Quote Link to post
Taffybull 48
[i would expect a schooled dog,.a 'made ' dog,.to go to the end of the beam,...no matter how far...] couldnt agree more chalky Edited February 4, 2010 by Taffybull Quote Link to post
zap 4
if you,ve started your dog of right and gave it a few nice close slips gradually giving it longer and longer that dog will trust you as much as you should trust it and when you point that light he will show his trust and run the beam blind maybe at first but he will go because he knows his job Quote Link to post
merle24 61
wherever the beam points,, (on the ground) Quote Link to post
