madmackie 11
I Have been flying hawks for 14 years i wouldnt use pea gravel as it could be picked up easily by the bird and cause no end of trouble i am lucky that we have a pine wood near to us so i use fresh pine needles or if i cant get any i use 20mm round gravel or stone. If you bird bates a lot( i am assuming the bird will be teathered as it is a mews )then i would go for a softer material on the ground even a good layer of sand as if you use a gravel the talons could become blunt. The down side of astro turf is cleaning it hope this helps cheers and good luck Pete Quote Link to post

graham01 1
use 6mm gravel it cleans the crop out If its a Harriis gravel is ok,falcons forget it,its a nightmare on wing tips and tail espescially with a batey bird. Quote Link to post
jasper65 6
I Have been flying hawks for 14 years i wouldnt use pea gravel as it could be picked up easily by the bird and cause no end of trouble To be honest I can't see what trouble it will cause? Falconers have been useing Rangle for centuries plus many times I pick up castings in the Peregrine aviaries where the birds have injested stones voluntary.... Pea Gravel is fine! I use even finer gravel more like heavy chicken grit on some Falcon nest ledges, its horses for courses but I can't say I have ever had a problem with it since I first started playing birdies .... atb Jasper Quote Link to post

trappa 517
The rougher side in, smooth out, but the rougher side , once it has been treated isnt rough, its soft and pliable. hope this helps. Quote Link to post
graham01 1
Just an obsevation mate ,that perch in the aivery and i didnt call it a bow perch on purpose, isnt really good enough, its square and the ring will not run over the legnth of the perch because of the corners.Bow perches are, well bow shaped for that reason, the ring will foul on the corner and at the least trash your birds tail. The weathering looks a little narrow, the bird will catch its primaries on the wire when it bates or flaps.I hope you dont think im pulling it apart but get it right from the start and you will cut out a lot of mistakes people who are new to Falconry make Edited February 4, 2010 by graham01 Quote Link to post
