cooper101 86
I never thought bull/cross owners could be so touchy about their dogs, just read your pm al,for everyone else we all keep the cross we like,I have kept and tested to the limit every cross you can name in the my 51yrs and it is my opinion that there is no place for it in a working lurcher, the greyhound already has bull in its history, and it was kept to a small percentage for a reason,I realise the benefits it gave the breed, stamina, drive and aggression to name but a few.I only ever owned a bull/whippet/greyhound 20yrs ago it would catch rabbits and then eat them whole if it could before I could get to it,it never caught a hare, the only use it had was at the end of a dig,I bought it as a three year old with these faults thinking I could get it fit and make a reasonable dog out of it,sold him to some digging lads who were made up with him.too much muscle all over slows a dog down, read the history of bulls,it wasn't given that head to retrieve hares,as for the antis out there, all these things are obviously pre-ban.If you live your life with a bull/cross I hope you like the dark as your dogs will be that marked up you will have no option but to go out in the dark, some dogs with a small amount of bull may do very well, but I'll never see one to find out,not my type.I don't live my life sneaking round hiding from antis, never altered my style of hunting for forty odd yrs,not going to start now, life is for hunting not hiding, going by the aggressive style of your post you have the right dog for your disposition,I don't live my life to please you or anyone else,I really don't give a sh*t. ps:if you can't read the big words ask your five year daughter to read it out loud for you. sorry but in response to your (in the my 51yrs and it is my opinion that there is no place for it in a working lurcher, the greyhound already has bull in its history, and it was kept to a small percentage for a reason,I realise the benefits it gave the breed, stamina, drive and aggression to name but a few.) wat planet have you been living on my friend 51 years old and your trying to say that the greyhound the purest of dog breeds and one of the oldest has bull in its heritage!! i have heard it all now get real my friend and do some history on dogs a good place to start would be a greyhound!! all the best!! Night_Runner 0
Alrite lads, I dont have a running dog, i'm a shooting man myself but i do find it interesting reading this section of THL. I see lots of pics of blokes in tracksuits with a bull cross and a hare and i guess i was wondering where people actually use their dogs? Or is that not a good question to ask? lol. I live in the fens and theres loads of rabbits and hares (to shoot and retrieve) but no one round here owns lurchers. I dont know if that resembled a question but theres a lot of people who put pics up and i wondered where people go to work their dogs. If it wasnt a good question nevermind. Sam Sam, bet you there are lurcher men living near you there, lads who dont advertise the fact not like a lot of the type you mentioned, i dont know maybe its me but i love the course much more than the kill but that seems to have all changed now in the lurcher world now Too true! The blokes you are talking about are usually doing it somewhere their not meant to be. . . . they dont really live for the hunt - they live for the kill and the picture they can show their mates / post on a forum! Its really sad, they bring a bad name upon us and take too much game too loudly. And yes the love their bull x's. Lets hope they find a new fascination soon and leave the hunting to the rest of us. atb, Jai. Maybe not everyone is as lucky to have permission,, I dont have a problem with taking a walk on the other side of the fence, Aslong as you are respectfull of the land and the wildlife on it. ,, I dont take pictures of everything i kill, but i do like the odd phot here and there to remind me of my good times out in the feilds. The modern day racing greyhound was made by adding bulldog to the desert type dogs (not the AKC shit either). Thats the reason they are so much more muscled up and are so much more snappier. Of course its also the reason they have less endurance and are generally less sound. We aint talkin first cross here fellas. The modern day racing greyhound is way different that the original hunting type greyhounds. Quote Link to post
Sonny Brindle 2
real lurchermen (or women) for the most part keep to themselves, they work hard training their dogs, getting and keeping permission and don't need to display pics of their deeds. theres also too many individuals (cant use the words lurchermen or hunters) willing to steal ground, dogs or ferrets never seen a bull cross that could catch a good winter daytime hare, and if it did by some misfortune;the hare running into something:it would be eaten before you could get to it,but all the butch tyro hunters will all be off to the fens now you've told them where they are, bull crosses are not running dogs, they're fighting dogs Yeah, because it was a secret that there are lots of hares on the fens and now this guy's let the cat out of the bag. boyo 1,398
innan old mate you have seen a bullcross catch daytime hares given fair law the first time we ever met i was running bella the bitch i mentioned on this site with all the prey drive it was many years ago and the first words we ever spoke were when you said you greedy b*****d lol because she pinched your run and the first i ever spoke to you was sorry for doing it . she was threequarter greyhound and quarter pit bull by the famous buck of the welsh valleys . but let me also say that no bull cross imo will ever compete with a purpose bred hare dog and shouldnt be expected to they are completely differant types of running dog. hope to see you about in the summer mate if not we will have to try and get a run the same day next season. kill um with crisps 7
When i started out getting into lurchers and i was ready to get one of my own i told my mate i wanted one that could demolish rabbits all day long as thats its main job by far but i also want it to be able to tackle bigger stuff like foxes, hares and the odd deer. His reply was "if you want it to take fox youle be needing some bull in its make up". So far iv had beddy whippets, collie xs and beddy whippet greys but still no bull xs. I will probably get a bull x one day as i like them, there look and their bouncey, everywhere flat out attitude they seem to have. All of the running dogs iv had have been more than capable of taking rabbits, hares and foxes. Each to there own. Quote Link to post
