Guest 2GOOD
totally agree with endgame dogs either have it or they don't ( born with it ) dogs can not learn to be clever please correct me if im wrong ,so your saying that a dog must be born with the know how from day one that it must not run flat out on game ,but learn to pace its self ,what a load of nonsens , I dont think that is what he really meant. I think he meant they were born with the ability to learn how to run clever. then it is just that the dog uses its brain or it does not ,and if that is the case ,you can teach a dog to use its brain ,or run clever , Quote Link to post

Endgame 68
Another thing one must seriously take into consideration here is this. The truely great fast dogs are not weak or brittle. They are not injury prone at all. They are the best of their kind and they can absolutley fly and take any tumble that a half breed collie lurcher could take. If you think of it, they should be able to. They are damn near perfect in every aspect. If they were not, they would not be the athletes that they are in the first place. Never will you see a straighter legged, more muscled, solid hound that them fast as lightning jack rabbit or hare dogs that them boys run. They float over the ground with the greatest of ease and never get injured. Thats cause they are what we should all be lookin for. Dont settle for a slow dog just cause it wont get injured. That might well be, but the sumbitch aint never gonna catch nothin but a cold either. a fast dog would not last a week in the places i work my dog ,mabe ok for you on them vast plains where they get time to pull up or turn wide ., We run ours in timber ground all the time so I aint buyin that either. dan you dont run dogs in small fields with hedges and walls like we do ,a fast dog does not cut it in these places ,that is all im saying ,other wise i would get a greyhound .or pure whipet . I would have thought the opposite were true; fast dogs for the small fields, plodders for the fens. Cheers. yes mate fast to cover then slow to stay on the game i have seen dog's pass rabbit to stop then get to the cover there fast enough but they are still on it , dan when you say timber ground do you mean wood's or forest ect , how do you lamp that ??? without losing it's game , NEVER MIND LOSING GAME, A RUNNING DOG WOULD LOSE ITS LIFE OR AT LEAST BREAK SOMETHING EVENTUALLY! SO SUCH DOGS ARE VERY KEEN.SO A DOG THAT DONT LEARN TO TEMPER ITS PACE WILL CERTAINLY TAKE INJURIES,BE IT MUSCULAR/SKELETAL/OR FROM OBSTACLES SUCH AS BARBED WIRE. SO ITS EITHER GONNA LEARN 2 RUN A BIT SMARTER OR BY THE TIME ITS GOT OVER ITS INJURY IT WILL BE MAD KEEN WHEN TAKEN OUT AGAIN & RISK INJURY ALL OVER AGAIN???? ITS FINDING THAT BALANCE INBETWEEN & ITS A LOT EASIER SAID THAN DONE, COS IVE TRIED IT 4 YEARS.THERES NO WORSE FEELING THAN SITTING IN THE HOUSE & ITS BLOWING A GALE OUTSIDE OR GETTING DRAGGED SHOPPING COS U HAVE AN INJURED DOG IN THE KENNEL & NOTHING BETTER 2 DO.ITS IN THEM 2 LEARN OR IT AINT,ITS AS SIMPLE AS THAT,BUTS THATS JUST MY OPINION... bigears 205
2GOOD get yourself a copy of lucky the dark destroyer ( i am only picking this dog as most people of here will have heard of him ) this is what i call a cleaver dog, he used to stops his hare going were it wanted to go, he slowed it down to his pace, not like a fast dog who keeps on over running his hare and pushing it, a dog only has to be 1 yard quicker than the hare he is running, a hare will only run as fast as the dog behind him/her, you can not teach a dog to run like lucky used to run, or are you saying you can teach any dog to run like lucky?, Quote Link to post

chartpolski 23,839
I've owned and worked running dogs for almost 45 years; I've ran dogs all over the world, on a bewildering array of quarry; but I've NEVER had anyone tell me a RUNNING DOG is "to fast" !!! O.K., a Greyhound or Non Ped Whippet will run itself into injuries, but that is because they are usualy track dogs, let loose once in a while to run live quarry. I'm a Saluki fan, but to see them on the fens, doing 2-3 minute courses, (which is actualy a long time for a course), is like watching paint dry ! If you are out day or night, to fill the freezer, you need a FAST dog, not a dog that sits behind waiting for the quarry to make a mistake ! Rabbit courses are to short for a dog to "work" the rabbit; the dog needs to be fast up and "hoy it's heed in", (strike quickly), It realy is nonsense to talk about dogs "going through the gears" on a rabbit. Only an inexperianced or useless dog overshoots it's quarry continualy, they should soon learn with work. Cheers. Quote Link to post
