i work with horses, if you consider they need shoes every 5-6 weeks(50-70quid), livery, feed, bedding, turning in/out, dentistry, insurance against vet bills ( or vet bills), without considering the bridle, saddle ( around 5-700), rugs for winter, bandages for shins, plus time to break in and cost of the horse itself and of course a hat, whip, boots and lessons........

You could average a total cost of around 600 a month, or just call it a money pit.

Or you could go to a riding schoool, pay 17-25 quid for around 30-40 minutes tuition and be loaned all the above for free, then going on a hack 30quid for around 2-3 hours, no mucking out involved. Or offer to muck out in exchange for lessons.

Good luck

Or do the above and loan a horse there, usually a few hundred a month including loan of tack, Basically the horse is your responsibility but if you cant make it up one night or something you can just call and someone else will do everything for you that day. Plus you can ride that perticular horse/pony a few times and get to know it before spending your cash to loan.

A LOT! Really it depends which part of the country you are in, and what is available in your area. Horses are a huge commitment though, they do cost a lot of money just getting the vet to the stables costs us nearly £50 and that's before he even looks at the horse! However, if you're really keen look for livery stables in your area and get some prices which can vary a lot depending on whether you want DIY, part or full livery.
