Pheasant Shoot

Recommended Posts

Pheasant shoots are not my thing as many of you will know, I've only ever been an about 4-6 (never paid and never will), doesn't interest me I have to say, just too artificial for my liking...BUT, not a criticism of those that do like them, just not my bag!!

Anyway, I am fortunate to know a few people and received a personal invitation to a private shoot on Boxing Day, unfortunately I already had other fixed plans and couldn't make it...so the invite got extended to the Beaters Day Shoot yesterday.

The day was spent at a freezing Marlborough estate where the hospitality was great, the company excellent, even though I only knew about half the people before I arrived, and the end of season shooting was excellent, 16 brace of mixed bag but first class condition.

Also saw rabbits at 11.55 on a large bank :hmm: , 2 partridge, several woodcock, 3 Fallow and 5 Roe!

I missed my first bird altogether, put it down to the fact I hadn't shot the Silver Pigeon I was using for a year or so....the next went down big time, but I was chastised for taking it a bit soon (let it get further away or there will be nothing left to eat....hell...if it's safe I shoot it....you can see I'm not used to these shoots). No problems with the second and that was my lot. Missed another and then the typical beginners mistake...how red was my face :icon_redface: ..idiot...beautiful cock was driven straight at me...it was just like the first tower of the skeet shoot...it kept coming ...steady...wait for it...squeese the trigger and...NOTHING....I had left the safety on!!!!! It was difficult to crawl away and hide so everyone had a good laugh!!!!

The temperature actually got as high as 1C at one point, but spent most of the day between -2 and 0C...the urn of soup at lunch was really well appreciated ........and if I'm honest I did quite enjoy the day.

Perhaps it was because I was amongst "friends", perhaps it was because we were all there for fun, perhaps it was because there was a Semi, a Webley and Scott single and a Poachers gun in the field, perhaps it was because nobody was trying to get one up on the other, perhaps it was because nobody was worried about how expensive there guns or clothes were...but I think it was simply because everyone knew the score and was out to enjoy themselves!

12 guns, 16 brace in the end, everyone happy!!!

Few pictures, the yard, lunchtime bag, lunch, and then my brace at the end of the day!
