fmwtc 12
well lads i have been reading the thread about ken gould and his black stuff some good points and some crap points running a man down for his choice of breeding for a few pounds. The working terrier can come in all forms from a ten minute wonder to a stay all week warrior there is a lot of folk it has become apparent on here with a lot of knowledge and a lot that think they know i have been about terriers since being a lad and have witnessed some of the very best work owned by some of the names mentioned regular on sites like this one and some by men you will of never heard of.a special dog isnt the one that will stay all day taking mercy less punishment its one in my eyes that makes it look easy time and time again ok they will take punishment or use to in the preban days but they make it look easy lads whats your thought on it p.s i dont mean a dog that has done a couple of seasons i mean tried and tested seasoned workers ones with a lot of work under there belts.dr,s dog jock was a good dog so was black jack i could name others. for me the special dog has to have that extra gear no matter how bad the job in hand is one that will give and take without rendering himself useless the hard no bay dog is ok but seldom few ever live to become special lets hear your comments on this just give me a minute to put my helmet and armour on. steveS.Yorks 161
Put this on another forum, this was some bitch by anyones standards. My mate J phoned me one Sunday morning, his dog terrier "Grip" was missing when he got up that morning,at first he thought someone had stolen him but a phonecall from another friend saying he had found a dead terrier by the side of a local road and it looked like Grip confirmed he had escaped by himself,we think he was headed for some local earths we worked regularly and knowing the dog he probably was. "J" was heartbroken,Grip was a good honest worker,a chocolate Lakeland bred from DR's dogs,a little big for general fox work but a sensible worker who had his uses. "J" and i carried on that season with my dogs but i could tell it wasnt the same for him without his own dog. I called for him one morning in febuary and he came out of his garden gate with a terrier bitch,a small, scrawny, rough haired black Lakeland type,he told me "E" had given him the dog to "try" E was only interested in rabbits and apparently he was fed up with the bitch going to ground, maybe she would work fox he thought. She jumped in the van and immediatly jumped on my lap, licking my face and fussing me like a pup[she was aged around 2yrs at the time] i looked at J and asked how much he had bought her for "nothing" came the reply "E" said give her a try and if you want her she's yours,i wasnt very optomistic,"Sacha" didnt have a mark on her and had the temprament of a Labrador, she laid quietly in the back of the van for the hour drive into Derbyshire. We arrived at the first farm and Dough the farmer said he had seen a dog and vixen around the north boundary of his land,a steep rocky bank that overloked his sheep grazing fields,we knew the ground and headed for the earths/rock piles knowing we would "find". At the first 2 earths my dogs showed a bit of interest but didnt mark,we were nearing the third earth and my old dog "Sam" began to pull towards it, "there's one in here" [we were still 30yds from it] i said and J nodded knowing the Sam was seldom wrong. It was a one hole affair, about 12 ft deep in solid rock,we never had to dig it the foxes allways bolted, i suspect it was quite large inside and the foxes couldnt get away from the terriers. J wanted to try the new bitch and feeling it was safe enough for a novice i said go ahead, she hesitated slightly at the entrance, sniffing at the sides, she looked at us wagging her tail before slipping into the entrance. I waited a few minuits before turning on the locator and sure enough she was bang in the usual spot, she stayed there for 10 minuits and as usual a fox exploded into the net,a bit of sloppy pegging[i netted up] saw the fox roll a few times and throw the net to make its escape,i watched it run off across the bank and had mixed feelings, cursing my bad pegging and at the same time admiring the foxes sure footing and speedy escape along the steep rock bank. Sacha came out a few seconds later, i caught her up before she could follow her fox,she had completely changed and was totally focused on her quarry, she pulled at every earth we tried her at that day but unfortunatly nothing was at home. We worked her for maybe another 9 seasons and took hundreds of fox with her,she hardly ever got more than a few superficial marks and was allways "on the nose" all things considered probably the best working terrier ive ever seen and she never lost the pup like temprament. Sash went blind eventually but it didnt make any difference, she still worked like a trooper, "J" gave her to a relative of mine who keepered a grouse moore at the time and she worked the odd fox until she was 14,she died in her sleep aged 16 in front of his fire. If someone had offered me the dog i wouldnt have given them a tenner for her,i would gladly pay £1000 for her now,if i was 20 years younger that is. Its actually the black bitch with white chest on the photos in the recent white lakeland thread. 1 Quote Link to post

steveS.Yorks 161
Thanks lads, she was a very good bitch and i can honestly say she never let us down,we bred her a couple of times to my Lakey dog, unfortunatly the pups were plagued with bad luck, the first litter only one bitch was born alive, similar to its dam only a touch stronger, she was a bit hard to be honest even from a young age,we gave her to a keeper who only needed a dog for the occasional dig and she did the job well for a couple of seasons until a rock fall killed her and a dog from the second litter[dont know why 2 were in wasnt there myself?] Similar bad luck followed the pups from the second litter,a couple did last a good while though and worked pretty well,if a touch game for my liking,we didnt keep any so maybe it would be a different story if we had? yis steve.
