Falconry licenses

Hello! I'll start by saying I know absolutely nothing about the sport of Falconry and it is because of this fact that I'm asking this question. Speaking briefly to My vet yesterday, He mentioned getting licenses for taking Starlings and Larks with a "Perlin" How is this possible when it is illegal to trap or shoot Larks?

It is a quarry licence which you can apply for to take certain traditionaly hunted species (ie larks/pipits with a merlin,blackbirds with a spar,certain gulls for pest control ect).They will grant a licence for a specified number of birds to be taken within the season,normally with a hawk/falcon traditionally flown at them,so they wouldnt probably grant you a licence to take blackbirds with a harris hawk!

What you seem to be saying is, although I wouldn't be able to shoot or trap Larks ,Pipits etc,(not that I want too) they are a protected spieces but with a small Falcon and a quarry license those rules no longer apply, is that right?

You are sounding more and more like an anti? if its legal then it can be done,if it isnt it cant,simple!.Stay within the law and happy Falconry!

i think the problem is that you seem to be asking questions which you can look up yourself.

the falcon you are refering to is a merlin. alot of the stuff you will want to know is in the "frequently asked questions" section pinned at the top of the forum.

 

people are wary of answearing questions which could be turned around or twisted by " antis" and shed a bad light on the sport/lifestyle they enjoy and some live for.

 

check the pinned section,inform yourself as much as possible and you will find that most will try to help you out if they can.

The Bird in question is a "Perlin" Peregrine/Merlin Hybrid and having done a lot of Googling could not find the answers I was after so natuarly thought I'd come on Here Because as I already said I know nothing about Falconry but as an ex-Gamekeeper and someone who still Shoots and Traps I was really curious about the brief bit of info I'd been given. As for the rest I don't put up with Pricks wherever I come across them!

If you dont want to be treat like an a rsehole then dont act like one,its no problem you asked a question, but you made a rather curt statement about it being ok to hunt protected birds just because its with a hawk! and that is precisely the type of post that our forums have had to put up with from Antis, so wind your holier than thou kneck in because if you are a gamekeeper "people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones"

I used to be a Keeper I now own My own land and do what I please on it. Which at some point may include Falconry. like i said before ,you were not asking anything but making an inflamitory statement,its like me going on another forum and saying "so do you think its ok for a row of fat blokes to shoot overfed pheasants pushed into the sky for fun?" and say im trying to clarify something,its not is it?this is a hunting forum so have respect for others sport and if genuinely interested ask in a less provocative manor.I will leave it at that...BTW i like your avatar,its a huge cock ahemm!

The problem you will find with falconry is that there a lot of di**he**s involved which im not going to go into....Having said that there are some people in falconry who's advice within the sport is priceless and are generally very nice people.You dont need a licence to hunt most game species in most areas in falconry as long as you stay within the seasons(october to the end of january).Falconry is not easy to get into as you must learn the how to look after a Bird of prey and train one, this is not easy and will take a very long time round about a year. In order to learn you must find a decent mentor or do a recommended five day course at a center. If you cant do either of theses then you can always volenteer at a Bird of prey center thats what i have done. If your interested Pm me and i will give you more advice on the subject.
