can I just say terrier work is not about just digging, the most efficient use of this clever little dog is a quick bolt, just like ferreting, but with a dog,it means the dog must be spannable round the chest so as to put the quarry under enough pressure to bolt,so long as your quiet on your approach, most foxes will bolt easilly, also they are great little busher's for rabbits catching a few in the process,d'ont limit your dog to just rats.remember brian bred this dog to be an all rounder, not just a ratter

i must take my 8 yr old dog out and shoot it then, i cant span him and he keeps getting too close to mr fox who sometimes doesnt bolt....naughty dog...

mate,I'm not having a go about bigger dogs, been out with lots of bigger dogs and they have their place, but round here most earths are scraped out rabbit holes and bigger dogs struggle to get on terms quickly enough, smaller dogs can have their limitations, especially with head size, but they are able to get around the earth quickly,a clever dog will pressure the quarry to the point were it is easier to leave the earth than stay,it is when you get one up a stop ender your in the s*it.I owned a bitch that was 13inch by 13inch but she was still spannable, afterall that is the test spannable,I have done terrier work for forty years ,that includes the mid wales hunt and both cheshire hunts and you try explaining to a waiting field why your terrier is taking so long to get a bolt,I can get around half a dozen earths and drains while your digging the first one,its horses for courses mate, its also about improving our breed,no-one suggests that you shoot your dog,I am sure by your comments that you love your dogs as much as me,yours in sport wirral countryman
