3/4 or 1/2 beddy whippets

Recommended Posts

I had a beddlington X whippet/greyhound that i did alot of lamping with and he was a very good dog,

I felt he lacked top speed and struggled to make ground when a rabbit was really moving.

He only ever caught one daytime rabbit but countless on the beam.

I think putting him back over a pure whip or grey would have produced more useful pups for me.

But as a dog purly for mooching any of the above would make decent dogs if they are brought on properly

I thnik a 3/4 beddy 1/4 whippet would be spot on for mooching aswell.

If we are just talking about ped whippets cross bedlingtons i would prefer 3 qaurter whippet for the exstra pace and after seeing a lot of beddy 1st and second crosses the best one's have always been males out of a first cross greyhound beddy in all honesty i have never seen the point in breeding f1x beddy/whippets as pups out of a grey will do all this cross is capeable of and more, atb dell

quite true, but when working and flushing a hedgerow in small fields dont you think a whippetx would do better over the shorter distance were you need a dog with tighter turns horses for courses comes to mind

I thought that myself as the beddy/grey/whippet i have at 21tts is nowere nr quik of the mark as her litter brother whos 23 an half tts.Even beddy hybreds over 22tts i have seen have been very quik off the mark and agile as well and imho benefit for the exstra hight over say a 19tts beddy/whippet cross even in small feilds. Its only my opinion based on wat i have seen .atb dell

very interesting that, it throws a spanner into the works on my theory. conclusion- at the end of the day if your dog be whatever size or cross does in your mind what it was breed for you then will have the best dog in the world for your own needs

My conclusion is even though beddy hybreds from different sires and dam look the same their can be alot of difference in their running ability as the one i have is not a patch on other beddy hybreds i have seen and had.atb dell

My own personal oppinion is 3/4 working whippet x 1/4 bedlington for 2 reasons. First and most obvious is speed and strike, secondly down here ( Hampshire) if ferreting/bushing etc Bedlington coat picks up too many sticky bags (Burdock) and cleavers (goose grass) so the more smooth or broken coat ,as opossed to rough coat the better. Especially around paws, ears, eyes etc as they drives a dog mad. Please remember this is just a personal observation. A,T,B.

i own a half cross beddy whip that i bred my self. i couldn't be more please with her at the moment, a perfect ferreting dog which is what i want her for mostly, and shes coming on well on the lamp. I'd say she can turn tighter than my mates dog(21 inc beddy whip x Colly Grey. ). and she isn't much slower either. but i have never seen a 3/4 bred cross work so i can't say which is best , but mine ticks all the box's for the work i do.
