Hi I now have a deerhound x wolfhound greyhound he 5 month and won't retrieve at all I hegemony taught my other mutts to retrieve and many of my mates have. Gave me there dogs for a few month to bring out the retrieve in them. As my pup is showing no interest at all I have been looking into force breaking so my big q is where can I send him to be force broken at I feel if I try it myself I may break my dogs spirit also I have never had a pup before only older dogs so is this to young for him to be retreving just a lil advice thanks stew .

Five months is too early for force breaking. Some times called force fetch over here. The breeds that make up your dog all mature slowly. So, around a year would be good. The earliest for quick maturing dogs is around seven months. When the adult teeth are in. For help, contact a gun dog guy or girl that has done it quite a bit. I could send a couple of links to explain the process if you like. But experienceed help is alot better. IMHO.

 

Your pup sounds like he'll be a machine. Good luck.

i have 2 pups the now lad both under 5mth and are going over knee high fences with dummies not a problem

and retrieving straight back to hand,,i'll only give them 4 to 5 retrieves a day as with to much they

tend to switch off a little1!some breeds will tend to be better at fetching game than others keep

working at it spend as much time as you have and it surley will pay off {patience}and a small treat

ist its not natural for lurchers+longdogs to [retrieve], its more natural for them to [chase+kil]. They can do it but some are better than others.As above it to young to make it,and it should [always be a gamme] not a feckin chore.??? Wait till its older, and if it does ,as do some dont.???

No mate it does Chase the dummy so that the start and his recall is 100 % he picked up sit stay come within about a week or 2 its just the retrieve

Forget about retrieving for a while and get him a toy that he loves, a fluffy 1 is good, an old childs teddy etc. Get the dog obsessed with the toy, lots and lots of play, keeping it fun and short 5 min sessions. Take the toy away after each session and when you play again, get him really excited. Once the dog is actively playing with the toy, start by just sitting on the floor with him in a smallish area, and throw the toy a little way, only a few feet, as soon as the dog picks it up, call him, praise him and make a real fuss. If he heads back to you with it then even better, gradually increase the distance and you'll soon find the dog will start to get the idea. 5 months is still very young, and everything is a game, the key is to keep it fun and exciting so he doesn't even realise he's learning a skill at the same time.

great response Hannah, with you 100%, too much retrieving will spoil your dog, you need to really lay off it, tease the dog with a certain toy as Hannah mentioned, a tennis ball may be good as you could store it in the dogs food, scent will be on it then and more interesting. don't be throwing the ball long distances when you do start the retrieving again, just sit down and throw the ball in a very close proximity, teasing then throwing & lots of fuss. Hopefully pup will like the game & you keep taking baby steps until your on the real thing, no pressure & no rushing to take the ball off him let him play with it at first. Because he will soon realise there is no point in making a retrieve if your taking it instantly!

Hey lads thanks for all help believe it or not the lil bstards brains have just started wœking I think it has just clicked with him he doin a few retrieves at a time thanks and its been an education atb stewie
