Sunday outing. Finally got it posted

Recommended Posts

I've just acquired a new permission on small small holding geese, hens, ducks and a shed load of rats. So off I went early Sunday morning to meet up with the gang, my mate - Pete his Mrs. and his 11 year old lad for spot of ratting. We took 3 terriers two patterjacks and an Irish Russell  a smoker, 410's with magnum carts :whistling: whacking sticks.

Now these rats have been busy they're living in a colony in a dyke that's about 40 - 50 meters long and honeycombed with holes and tunnels, on one side is a wide path/avenue, the water is about a foot to 18" and on the other is the colony with brambles and trees at the top of the banking then the coups behind them. Should be plenty of sport then :boxing:

The owner of the land and his wife came out (as it is a social event is ratting  ) with brews and a friendly word and what's that the owners got......... a 12 bore :icon_eek: Well Pete not to be out done disappeared and reappeared not only with a big grin but his 12 as well :clapper:(overkill sprang to mind)

Well after a natter and a fag we all lined up on the path boy with a 410 magnum, Pete on the smoker first, Mr. owner and his little friend his wife watching, Me 410'ed up the mates Mrs. We loosed the dogs and Pete got to work with the smoker the tension was mounting as the dogs got more and more excited then bang out shot a rat who was instantly munched by my patterjack (Yes I was proud he got first blood  ) This lone victim was soon followed by 4 buggers making a run for it next thing boom boom the gaffer blew them up then the lad fired a volley at them all 4 were hit but only 1 retrieved the others were liquidized by the 12 bore into what can only be described as a cloud of rat floating downstream :D The dogs accounted for another 2 one dug out. Then the owner shot another on his newly built and not quite finished stone bridge left a bit of a mark

By now it was the lads turn to have a do with the smoker so in he went, 2 minutes later he managed to fill his boot with water so now it was my turn. So there I was quietly minding my own business smoking the holes out when the quiet dyke turned into the bloody Somme as the banking and the booms erupted about 2 -3 meters on either side of me :icon_eek: followed by the fart of a 410 and more soil raining on me when the ringing had stopped I looked round and saw another cloud of rat floating away and one retriever. I got out of the dyke and on we moved to the pond.

The pond is a not large maybe 25 - 30 foot in diameter and pretty clear apart from one of those bushy grass plants with feathery tips that grow on dunes into that went the dogs seconds later plop plop two of the buggers trying to swim away under water  sly little b@stards. Well the lad accounted for one with the 410. Then the second surfaced near the far embankment and as soon as it did BOOM both 12's were fired at the same time and I mean exact same time you couldn't differentiate between the blasts the rat just disappeared in a huge splash and ploom of water never to be seen again. :whistling:

we gathered up the rats for the day had a brew and some dinner I took my patterjack home and picked up the staffy then we moved onto find the charlie/s that've been causing the farmer on one of my permissions and me to go mental :censored:

Could we find the fecker's?? Could we fec :wallbash: We did at one point bolt a fox, which had a couple of carts emptied at it but the bugger kept on going :o with a staff and the two terriers in pursuit we called them back which eventually they did, then we walked up all the hedges, copses and pits still no foxes. We came on a pit that had a couple of mallard on it, So I sent the staff in to put them up which she duly did and the lad pulled off the best shot I have ever seen with a 410. 20 yards through trees to kill it outright :clapper: What a shot!!! The staff went in and retrieved it from the water the rest off the ducks decided now would be a good a time as any to fuuck off so off they went into the distance and dropped into another pit on the opposite side of the field. We walked up to this pit and again sent the staff in to put them up and the lad accounted for another duck.

We decided that today was not going to be a foxy day so we gave that up and went for a couple of rabbits instead. Nothing spectacular here just the normal good shooting from moi

End of the day's tally 11 rats, 4 of which were disintegrated, two mallard and four rabbits, a grinning 11 year old and a thirst that would put George Best and Oliver Reid to shame :drink: :drink:

:bye:

Good post Mushroom :clapper: :clapper: :clapper: , bit dodgy though with guns, what with fleeing rats and terriers in hot persuit.

Dodgy yes :icon_redface: but safety as always was paramount. The dogs were always safe, the rats weren't

Wouldn't mind inviting them on the next rat murdering excursion. May possibly have an accident with a swinging shovel :whistling::angel:
