Lee85 44
My mate and myself went out for a hunt this morning, we set off to our permsission at about 10AM, rather than the usual 6AM, It was a bit drizzly but not to bad. We didn't bother with a hide today as we were travelling light, just a rucksack with the flask etc. Got onto the permission at around 10:20am, zero'd our rifles in at about 35 yards then had a coffe - as you do, then it was off hunting, both rifles zero'd in within 3 shots which was good. We mooched around the place for a while and it was dead, hardly any noise either, this continued untill about 2pm - not a thing, and the ground was sloppy which wasn't the best. Anyway we went back to where we stashed our bits & had another coffe, then set out again! We split up and I saw around 3 squizzers and missed them all, they ran up the tree doing that 'laughing' noise! Met back up with my mate and we hunted a different part of the woods- I saw a squizzer and it set off, leaping from tree to tree, I tracked it and managed to shoot it in the side, not what I wanted but it was a bit of a rushed shot, anyhow it slowed it down & I capped it in it's skull! 1 down! Almost straight after we saw another one at around 30 yard away and I took a shot and missed but my mate saw it's head peeking and gave it it's dinner, dead before it hit the ground! It was getting on half 3 by now and we split again, heard my mates rifle popping and went to look - another dead squirrel, 2-1 to him! We were in some thick tree's and while he was recovering his squirrel which had fallen into holly bushes there was a jay pratting about above me, I tried to get a clear shot about 3 times but it kept flying off, but not far - we decided to set off home and about 2 mins later going threw the forest the jay landed quite far ahead - threw thin branches I took aim and aimed 1 mill dot over - BANG, down it fell - one of the best shots I've taken - and that was that! here are some pics: Cracking shot from my mate, straight in the neck The jay I shot in the head from long range cheers Edited January 24, 2010 by Lee85 Quote Link to post

Phantom 631
Nice going there See yah stopped a few of the squizzers laughing like demented ducks Are there a lot of Jays over your way on? They are very nice looking birds arn't they I hear they are in quite a decline at the moment (not knocking you for topping it btw as they are still on the GL's ) I've not actually seen a live one yet and its pretty rural out here. Lee85 44
Cheers for the comments lads. There are a lot of Jays yeah, we were discussing on the way home at how nice a bird they are, my friend was asking why there on the list and I said I think it's because there nest raiders and song bird attacks much like the magpie? During the day I heard constant Jay 'screeches' and the magpies here are unbelieable - they hang around in groups of about 8 - and I thought they were a solitary bird, we could do with trying to decoy them really, unfortuantley the rabbits have been hit hard but not by ourselves, the farmer has a bloke with ferrets and nets and also dogs and his given them a kick in to be honest, shame because we fancied some rabbit curry! Sweeney-Todd 208
Hiya Lee. Good shooting me dear, and excellent write up. Looking at some of the pictures, you have some very nice ground there. Almost looks like the ruins of an old iron age fort, with the dips and hollows? Noticed the old path in one of the photos, was there a building there at some time? Cheers. Bill. Quote Link to post
Lee85 44
it used to be a mansion + grounds, been deralict and ripped down since the fifty's - you can still get into the cellars if your willing to move a bit of rubble, very interesting place but it is all ruins now, that path is actually the floor of an old conservatory, theres slabs of stone in there as big as a horse, next time i'm out i'll take more pics of the place - some more intersting ones. thanks the comments guys! Yes you are correct the reason for them being on the GL's is they are a member of the Corvid Family as indeed are the Magpies and they do like to snaffle the song bird eggs.
