No you can't have WMR on a .22RF ticket. theoretically you should be OK, but firearms depts do not license it this way, and RFDs generally won't sell it this way either.

However, it is a good calibre, and yes it would be worth getting the barrel for your Quad.

i would give your fao a ring and clear it up as .22rf is not a caliber but a caliber group( it may save embarressment at your rfd.

good luck.

is it just me or is this often a problem? someone had the same with .22 cf on another thread. wording which seems confusing to say the least.

I applied for a 22RF first up. When the FEO came I said actually I want a 22WMR, he said fine. When I got my FAC it still said 22RF so I thought well fine that obviously includes LR and WMR. So I went to the dealer to pick my WMR up and he said well technically it should say WMR. I told him what happened and call the FEO if you're in doubt. He said no worries.

When buying ammo from the next place same ting, they both took my word and I believed I was in the right. When the cops got my notification of purchase they called me up and said I wasn't allowed that rifle. I explained what happened and they said MY FEO had querried it! They ended up saying sorry for our mistake and corrected my FAC. But it goes to show, in norfolk at least 22WMR is not considered a 22 rimfire. Even though it is...

i have a sako quad in.22lr my tickett just says .22RF so i assume i can have a 22WMR is this true? what does anybody have to say about the 22WMR? is it worth getting the barrel

As others have said this wording is confusing to say the least, and in my view VERY POOR on behalf of your region.

But moving on, the .22WMR really started to go out of fashion when the HMR appeared. The HMR most certainly has a place (I have .22LR, .17HMR and .22WMR) but it is not the new messiah which is now beginning to dawn on people. There is now a slow but steady resurgence in the .22WMR, still a long way to go though!!

I have a use and a place for all the rimfires I own, and the .22WMR is a cracker, gives me a great feeling of confidence with one in my hand and the V-Max ammo available puts it's flight path "close" to a HMR, but it arrives with a fair bit more grunt. 40g HP ammo is excellent and very tight groups are possible.

As a matter of interest WMR ammo is also a little cheaper than HMR, but still a fair bit up on .22lr.

I pay £41.80 for 250 Winchester Supreme 34gn Jacketed Hollow Point from Wilson & Wilson in Ramsgate Kent, and I find them very accurate, ideal for rabbits ,and fox,my best fox was 120 yds,and a clean kill (head shot)

who do i belive? spoke to a local gun dealer today regarding the barrel and i said "what do you think to the .22WMR for my quad" he replied with " what do you want one of those for totaly useless, wouldnt bother nah no good steer clear spend your money on something better" but surely if i have the quad and i can get the barrell for 100 quid or so then why not i mean we are boys who like are toys :gunsmilie:

in my eyes on application for an FAC you should state what the maximum calibre is you wish for and if this is granted you should be allowed to own anything below and a maximum of 6 guns obviously with variations for more or larger cal etc

Anyone that says WMR is useless needs to try one! They shoot pretty well and hit much harder than HMR. HMR is OK for long range bunnies; WMR is a proper fox round to about 120 yards - and it does rabbits. HMR does have a slight advantage in terms of accuracy though, but the WMR is perfectly usable.

You will still need to apply for authority to acquire, either as a variation or a 1 for 1 swap. Unless you have authority to acquire already on your ticket which you have not used. So when you do that........ask your FEO, or just tell them you need a WMR for long range work. If you have authority to aquire, try your luck as lon as your ammo says 22 rimfire, not 22LR, because if you are only allowed to possess 22lr ammo, you can not aquire WMR ammo.

If you see what I mean.

i asked my local RFD about the wmr and he said, WMR WHO :icon_eek: i haven't been asked about those for years. thats why eveyone says he's shops sh*t, you just know he doesn't stock it

its a nice round but given the chance i would use the 17mach2 instead £5+50

the mach2 is very under rated and hasn't taken off like its big brother. mike

I'm not quite with you on this one, the Mach2 has nowhere near the speed or power of the HMR, and the WMR has a chunk more grunt than the HMR.

The .17 Mach 2 is actually very similar to the .22 Magnum (WMR) in trajectory out to 150 yards, but not in energy. The 40 grain .22 WMR bullet delivers 115 ft. lbs. of energy at 150 yards, compared to the 64 ft. lbs. of the .17 M2. (the .17 HMR retains 99 ft. lbs. of energy at that distance.)

The Mach2 must have a use for something, but when you have a .22lr, .17HMR and a .22WMR to choose from it is very difficult to find anything where the Mach2 would be the one to buy!
