whippeter69 88
Last night my mate gave me a call seeing if i wanted to come for a lamp for some ferret food, i had'nt been out for a while so i said yes. He came to pick me up in his very nice Mitshibutshi ( Spelling) L200. So i took my new semi-auto and he took his. We were off to the first farm and the lane down to the farm was at one side of a field so we lamped that field while i walked by the side of the 4x4, We seen a hare about 100yds away so i walked out to the field and my mate kept the lamp on it, soon enough i was about 40yds from it and shot it while it was hopping towards me , One in the bag. The went to the next farm and these fields we could rive on, my mate lamped and i was shooting. I had a good shot at a runner and bowled it over in on shot while my mate sped up to catch it up. I had some good shot at some squatters aswell. We ended the night with 1 hare and 7 rabbits. It was my first time lamping from a 4x4 and it was one of the best experiances i have had ever, thurally enjoyed it and from what i had done reckon that it is an effective was of rabbit control as we covered a hell of a lot of land in a short amount of time. Sorry therers no pictures, i forgot to take any, i think i was too exited. Anyone else had a go ? Quote Link to post

Colster 1
One of the farms we shoot on has a lot of hare so we do take the occasional one but only if one of us wants it for the pot - Dunno if this applies to all ferrets but his won't eat Hare! Quote Link to post

Sorry therers no pictures, i forgot to take any, i think i was too exited. Anyone else had a go ? Hi whippeter69, Instead of calling you names i'll explain why people are saying you shouldnt be lamping hares. Hares are included in the legal definition of game. It is illegal to use any firearm or gun of any description for the purposes of taking game at night. Hares,as game are also not to be taken on Sundays and Christmas day. However the ground game act overides the game act and permits the shooting of hares at night, so really the best argument for or against shooting Hares is how many are on your patch and how much damage they are doing to crops etc. The trouble is sportsmen view the Hare as superior quarry to Rabbit which comes with being viewed as game.Hares lamp very easy and it is a effictive way of control IF there is a need to control them. Around here there is a healthy population but we may only take one a year, usually on a shoot day. Incidently you carnt sell or supply to be sold Hares between March and July the breeding season, there is no close season but in areas where the population is small taking hares in these months can severly reduce the population. The final thought I have on this is Hare tastes great if you cook it proerly so if you shoot one at least have a go at cooking it. I personally would not shoot Hares at night but if I had to i would use a rifle and take head shots so the meat isnt ruined. Anyway re lamping from a vehicle- glad you enjoyed it, we do nearly all our lamping from a 4x4 you can cover way more ground, and being higher up when in the truck makes for safer shots with me 22-250.I would say 8 out of ten foxes we take are shot in the lamp fron the truck or over the bonnet with a bi-pod. For rabbits I usually take an air rifle or the rimfire. Me and me mate have been lamping together for years and have got into a good routine. Its important you BOTH know the ground you're lamping aswell. Not only so you know ehich way is safe to shoot and so you dont end up getting stuck or in a ditch, alot of revving and wheel spinning dosnt make for a quiet nights lamping! I agree with netman on using a rifle for both Rabbits and Hares, the shotty makes too much mess if you're eating. Quote Link to post
