getting a dog going to ground

Recommended Posts

if you get chance to introduce them to fox( shot when lamping and still warm) then let them have a good rag,i find thid the best way to introduce them to the quarry without putting them off by being bitten.

have they not made any attempt to go to ground yet while rabbiting? i normally send them as pups through drain pipes and the like( short to start with and getting longer as time goes on). once they know the fox as quarry they tend to go to ground of own accord( keep an eye on them,it may be worth a collar). once that happens i would take them out and check some earths( if poss have an experianced dog to hand that can check the earth after he has been through).

some will start earlier than others, don't push them bud.

Once you've got their interest going be very carefull where you go, as you will no longer be able to just go out willy nilly, "they will be missing in action". As for starting them off, if you've been mooching about the fields anywere then you will already have started the process. i find with mine the mooching learns them to use their nose and as already said, the odd fresh fox here and there will give them something to spike their interest in the old vulpes vulpes.

ATB and the best of luck.
