There are only two types of terriers -- those that work, and those that don't.

And it's not all about the dog, is it? The dogs don't have keys to the truck and don't drive. So, push comes to shove, for a dog to work it has to be owned by someone who will work it. Kennel Club dogs are too rarely owned by people who work their dogs.

As for the Parson and the Jack Russell terriers, they are NOT the same dog. The Parson Russell terrier is, by definition, a dog that is being bred in a closed registry. A Jack Russell is not.

To understand why all working dogs (sled dogs, sheep dogs, racing greyhounds, terriers, etc.) tend to come from open registries, See Here

Just found these pics from last year of a mate's excellent earth dogs. They're from the same strain more or less, out of old Gould/Jones blood amongst others. Nicely line bred by a guy in Wales, I might just get myself a dog to match my Patterdale x Sealyham bitch this season :good:

As for the £100 and a bit of paper, couldn't agree more in many respects. However I still think it's worth differentiating between long-legged JRs and shorter-legged (almost achondroplasic) JRs. The bitches below are both long legged, and the larger of the two was 14" - as you can see it never stopped her working almost every weekend in hard places (pre-ban).

Talking of price differences, these dogs (from this strain I mean) still go for £100 and definitely do the biz! I've dug these bitches (below) out of many a hole, and couldn't fault them :clapper:

EDIT: Sorry forgot to say - the smaller white/red bitch is about 18mths old in the pic, and the older one is 11yrs old and was still working to ground at that time. She died at the end of last season after a good hard dig (on game-bird property).
