jpt 285
I am currently looking to get a pup and I am considering the above cross. I have heard that first cross dogs are not really ideal for lurcher work as they are unable to gallop because the hindquarters need to propel the hindlegs forward of the front legs in the galloping stride. The physical ability to do this is thwarted by the big skull, barrel ribcage, broad chest and wide back. A few words quoted from the book 'The working Lurcher' by Jackie Drakeford. What do you lot think? I have seen a litter which is first cross sire and line bred half cross dam which I am intrested in. The mother looks very athletic and the farther looks very muscley and heavy. Do you think that the off spring would be good runners? My quarry is mainly rabbit but I am looking for a dog that would be useful to work with gun and fox. Anyone with any advice would be a big help to me. I have had a look at Whippets and I am still thinking about the possibilityu of getting one. I am doing my research before I decide which breed to choose. Cheers everyone. JPT Quote Link to post
colliejohn 840
a lad i know as a lurcher bitch which as bull blood in it,she is a good bitch but she only as about 1/8 bull in her,the trouble with first crosses of this crosss is they can throw way to heavy and powerful for allround rabbit work such as ferreting daytime hunting up or lamping, this cross is more suited to other quarry such as controling foxes.you can,t knock bull crosses for guts and fire but saying that this can be a bad thing if it,s not in the right measure.if it,s just for ferreting daytime hunting up or for retrieving shot game you cant go far wrong with a collie cross, or bedlington cross also they dont make bad lamping dogs.regards collie john. Guest mush
So how many bull x's have you seen work colliejohn? I've got two bullx's bred of a half cross dog to a 3/8 bull bitch and they have plenty of speed for anything. jpt go out and see the father work and see for your self don't just go on what you read. If the pups look like their going to have enough greyhound in them for you, then get one Edited September 29, 2006 by mush Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
You can go on all day about the bull cross being a rabbitter but its not .Ive owned bullx and small lurcher types all my life and the smaller dog make the bulls look silly on rabbit .The bull cross was intended as a fox ,draw dog and excells at this .No such thing as an allrounder .You have to ask yourself if you really need all that power to catch a few rabbits. moonwalker 1
horses for courses , ive seen big first cross dogs made to look like puddings trying to catch reynard( pre ban of course) If you getting a first cross try to pick the lightest and maybe it will come up with the goods.I personally think you cant beat a good 3/4 , but thats just me Quote Link to post

brock 11
it might just be me but what is the point of getting a bull x for mainly rabbits, and th odd fox.you would be better of thinking of another dog imo,im not running the bull x down as they are good dogs but not for mainly rabbits, and before anyone starts yes i have probably seen more bull x s work than most on here ,obviously someone is gona say ivv had big bags of rabbits with my bull x,but im just saying,on a whole theyre not rabbit machines Quote Link to post
