New to Rabbit Shooting

Hi all,

 

Im new to the forum and Rabbit shooting - Ive search the forum but cant seem to find a starters guide to Rabbit shooting?

 

I have most of the gear I need (Rifle, knife, clothing etc) - other than knowing to go out dawn or dusk I would like to know if anyone can offer any other advice

 

Sorry if this has been covered before if so could you point me in the right direction

alright mate. sounds like your kitted out. if you have done your targets then you know your skills. i say the kill zone for rabbits is around 1 inch many say smaller like 2p etc anyway once you have this sorted then you are pretty much there the reason you want to be able to do this is most importantly humaine kills obviously secondly there is nothing more frustrating than taking a shot and not hitting. trust me if you dont hit a rabbit in the brain then it wont die in time for you to retrieve. anyway enough of that. you can either find thier warrens det up around 30 yrds away Downwind (or whatever your zero just down wind)and wait it could take 10 mins it could take 30mins just wait, as long as you know there are rabbits there. i normally go around 1;30 hours before dusk and set up markers of distances so you can judge holdover etc. the other method keep down wind walk and crawl the rabbits EXTREAMLY quitely stop regularly and observe what the rabbit is doing if its sitting up ears priked stop moving untill it starts eating. After a few stalks you will get the hang of it. good luck ask if you need to know anything else.

A good buy, and huge help, is a book writen by Pete Wadeson called " Total Airgun's" it realy is an excellent read full of info covering most aspects of hunting with an Airgun.

 

DVD's worth looking at are "Total Airgun Hunting" and "RABBITS by James Marchington."

first of all you need to join a club and do some paper punching and practice on groups at your desired zero which can be between 25yds to 35yds,once your consistently hitting the same kill zone which can vary from one shooter to the next some prefer to use a 2p coin,but majority of us use a 1p coin, i use a 5p coin.then once your groups are all within these,and you know your ranges and your hold under/over, then i would say your ready for the field and live quarry.

 

also at a club you will pick up help! & tips.and who knows some one may need a hunting partner

 

before you take the next step,a must is shooting insurance! BASA,BASC, etc...

and this will help your cause in getting some permission,as it shows a responsible shooter.also respect boundaries and live stock & buildings.once you have your written permission you will need to leave your rifle at home and do a recky of the land and look for bunny activity warrens,dropping,runs.sitty tress for corvids and pigeons and also flight paths of the pigeons.all of this information is available here!there are a good bunch of lads! who are willing to help peeps.

and a wealth of advise and help! so don't be shy in sending a few Pm's to a few on here who will help!

 

 

and when hunting as above always have the wind in ya face and deffo no smellies after shave, deodorant,body spray.

the Bunny's will be out in all conditions

its up to you Whether you want to participate in these conditions too!

"BE very very quiet" good advice above. one other thing i will say is practice then practice and practice and after tyou have done that practice a bit more. lastly enjoy it even in the poor (blank) days.

Thank you all for your warm welcome and advice

 

Davy I am a member of the BASC already I done this as soon as I brought the Rifle

 

I have been shooting targets for a bit now and managed to get them in a 1p area

 

Im out this weekend as a Friend of a Friend has a very big farm in the Tring area and wants some pests taken care of - Ill do the recky and then hopefully the shooting

 

Ill post some pic's on here if im lucky - Anyone in the Essex area want want to say hello just PM me

sounds like you are going to have some good results with good grouping like that and some good land. good luck fella! Also what gun are you using?

The only advise I can give you is to walk the ground your shooting on and see whats about, and what distance you will need to shoot at, then put in some practice at those distances, once you are confident with your grouping, bag up, and post it on here
