salukiwhippet 6
Because when I set talpex on iffy places (playing fields etc), I either set them in a run where the top of the trap is level or below the ground, or I build up a little "molehill" on top of the trap. I find duffus need quite a distinctive shaped hole, long and thin, and I never like building up too much soil on top of a duffus. Therefore when (if!!) the duffus fires, the kill loop sticks up above the soil. Just the way I do things, works for me. I have decided in the last couple of days that I'm going to give duffus more of a chance (mainly cos I've just taken on a big contract and can't afford enough talpex to service it completely! ) James Quote Link to post
IanB 0
You have a fair point James, I've used some similar to talpex, the ones supplied by magnum and they have handles on to help with setting, although they can protrude were I use them, more so than the duffus style by a lot.... Horses for courses, doesn't matter either way, as long as it works Quote Link to post
salukiwhippet 6
I saw the talpa ones at a gamefair, I was quite impressed, but those handles did put me off a bit. I spose there's always the grinder... Maybe I'll splash out on some, they're a bit cheaper than talpex. James Quote Link to post
trapperman 474
I do use the duffus in shallow runs, talpex is the daddy for me for most trapping though. I reckon 70% of the traps I set are talpex, and probably 90% of the moles I catch are in talpex. Still use the scissor type very occasionally. How do you rate the trapline ones? Quite intruiged by them I have to say. James i have had them for a while now and must admit that i dont get on with them that well they do catch and kill quite well but i just find them a little fiddly and of course you have to use 2 traps for each set and they are not cheap you also have to dig out your backfill to check them which adds to checking time, i use them sometimes in tight awkward runs tho. 100 half barrel traps from flatpack are about £280 thats at least 3:1 against the cost of talpex, and their good traps too Quote Link to post
IanB 0
Theres you pissing all that hard earned wonga from the moleing work up the wall chalkie, ya old boozer ya... Quote Link to post
salukiwhippet 6
Chalkwarren - rabbit curry's cracking! Sorry to hear about your trap losses, makes you mad don't it! Trapperman - if you want to offload a couple of traplines, I'd like to give them a go, drop me a PM and we'll see if we can come to an arrangment! Where in Oxon are you? James Quote Link to post
wingnut 27
Been the same for me back at the golf course when all the snow disappeared the moles had certainly been busy over xmas and i had my work cut out gaining control of them once again, my traplines didnt let me down neither did my talpex traps and i even caught one on some talpa traps i brought, but think i might grind my handles of the traps to make them less visible, pictures below of a good start to the new year. Horses for courses, doesn't matter either way, as long as it works How do you find those Magnum Talpa traps Ian? I fecking love em! I was always a duffus man till i was pursauded (by a very keen mole trapper who shall remain nameless ) to try these new talpa traps out and although i do still set the duffus out sheer spite, i generaly find that its the talpa that wins the day. I would reccomend them any day and i feel they are lot less fussy to set than the talpex Quote Link to post
IanB 0
Yes there good john, no doubting that..... Although I'm still conditioned to the duffus trap..... I've got a few talpa to put out though, probs be sunday... Quote Link to post

ellir0305 9
i do a couple of mole jobs for friends in return for skills and bartering etc. i only have a few traps, old scissors and couple of duffus i have been given over the years. i was wondering, what is the best way of setting the duffus style as i often find them fiddly to set however the fact that the soil doesnt fall through when you backfill is great. also where is the cheapest place to get duffus traps (good ones) as i understand they are the cheapest type. thanks atb rob Edited February 9, 2010 by ellir0305 Quote Link to post
salukiwhippet 6
The flatpack company are the best priced for decent duffus that I've found. As for setting them, make the hole only big enough for the trap - it needs to be tight. Oddly enough, I caught a mole today which has been making me look a mug for a week or so. Guess what I caught him in? A cheap and 'orrible scissor trap which I bought when I was starting out, and only set 'cos I'd run out of duffus and talpex! Goes to show, you never know!! ellir0305 9
cheers mate, i got a couple out of a friends paddock today with proper oldschool scissor traps (the good old ones) which i tweaked the springs up on so he's happy. 3 traps 1 day and 2 moles i'm chuffed with that. i will check out the flatpack place as i need some more traps. because my friends friend has an unwelcome visitor in her lawn (hopefully might get some petrol money though ) when it comes to setting the trap i meant setting it before placing it in the run, i can do that bit ok. its the getting them set thats tricky is there a nack or specific way of holding them?
