a working dog should be kept as a working dog but still looked after properly just like you would treat a pet dog

good point and also most working dogs are treat better than most pet dogs in regards to diet, exercise and trainning

suppose that is a bit true mate

Here is my pup at about 7 months old, lives out but is aloud in for 2 hours a day to mix with the kids. Just to get the dogs used to the kids and the kids used to the dog. She didnt think much of him when i got her in november and she would have a bit of a growl. Its amazing what a bit of time and effort can do. He has her eating out of his hand. She is fantastic with kids now. No worries about letting her off the lead when up the fields where the kids are.

i do not class my working dogs as pets ,not to say i dont try and give them the best i can, feeding, kenneling ect,iv lost a few good dogs over the years and have been gutted on more than one occasion, but this is the game we are in and losses are all to frequant,a pet dog imo is a family dog, indoors comfort for the wife and kids ect,yet i suppose the definition of pet can be interpreted in different ways,i dont have to come home and face the family with bad news ref loosing another dog that they may have all become attached to,just my oppinion thats all

totaly agree mate

OK how would you feel if you were a huntsman with a pack of hounds? Bred and raised them, entered and hunted them, knew them all by name, fed, exercised and cleaned up after them, definately workers  but could nt be called pets could they?

My dog is an ex-worker, now a companion. He's my third "working dog" companion, a lurcher. The previous two were JRTs; they both went ratting, bushing and racing and had long happy lives.

Were the lurcher (and I!) fitter, I'm sure he could do both; he still wants to work and gets the odd rabbit, but I don't think he would be up to "working for his living" as he has an old injury which can play him up if he runs hard. We still manage to have a lot of fun though and he isn't wrapped in cotton-wool as some pets are; we go out and about, and go racing and lure-coursing.

I for one wish there was more interaction between the "companion" people and the "working" people, as these dogs are after all bred to do a job and if you can understand and appreciate that job then you can start to understand and appreciate how to try and get the best from your dog, even if you don't have the opportunity to work it or the facilities to keep a kennel set-up.

Sometimes at events I want to ask questions or just talk to people about their dogs but get sideways looks because my dog is obviously not "working" (too much weight, coat if it's cold, gawd-help-us a WOMAN holding the lead!). But I'm genuinely interested in these dogs, even if mine is "just" a companion these days. That is his job now; he could be a lot worse off, and I gain a lot from his being here.

Call him a "luxury dog" if you like, and some working people probably will. But different people get their enjoyment and satisfaction from their dogs in different ways.

some good points raised on this post, i think the idea of a worker differs between peoples opinions i have my dogs here they work when they can and yeah i work them hard most times i go out, they live in the house and even sleep upstairs with me i use them to teach my kid about responsibility like why they have to be walked and worked if i am honest they are the reason to get me out of bed most days!! i try to train them the best i can so they are obidiant and broken to stock how does this compare to a worker?? to me it doesnt apart from i dont want to kennel them as dogs are pinched all of the time and dont want mine to become one of those statistics i bet mine will work as good as the next mans, my dogs are happy, looked after, do what they were bred to do and make me and my family happy thats all that matters to me call them pets call them workers but i would gladly run mine with any similar dog thats an apparant "worker"

fab i run my dogs and sometimes goto the shows etc to meet folk but you will find when you get talking to most they are full of shit like there dog done a red stag single handed then went onto do 5 out of 5 long ears, you ask to go out with them to see the dog in action and suddenly it hasnt caught 5 out of 5 or a red its been out a handfull of times and caught a few mixy bunnies as its still young!! you aint missing much if people are that ignorant to talk to you shite to them i always try to talk to people wether their dogs are huge couch potatoes or like rakes atvb...daks :victory::)

I think we need to differentiate between workers as pets AND pets that are worked  Police dogs, Hounds, greyhounds (track or preban coursing) kept by trainers and keepers gundogs etc. are what I would term full time working dogs that earn that title
