CcooneyMadDog 0
Hi all, just wanted to know if anyone has some real working dogs that they show, and whether their battle scars dont allow them to do aswell? Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
I dont agree with showing terriers. As soon as you start to breed a dog for one trait, it looses another (mainly working ability). How a terier looks is at the very bottom of my list of requirements. But there are some lads who do both. FTB Quote Link to post
recce 2
rosettes dont feed the dogs a freezer full of game does,i would not entertain a show to be honest, prob down to the fact i dont need someone else telling me how good,or indeed how bad my dogs are while im trying to pull its head off on the lead and worrying about how it looks while standing there Quote Link to post
TAZ BOY 4
seen many dogs win show with scars never entered myself Quote Link to post

robgriff1 4
seen many dogs win show with scars never entered myself EDRD final last year, 6 most beaten up dogs picked.plenty of smart looking good workers overlooked Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
i think a dog should be bred for work AND to standard for the breed( size, weight, defining features etc). undoubtably a healthy dog which gives everything should be the aim of any program. if it works well and looks good great, show it. if it doesn't work then why would you be proud of its looks??( money ). any show judge should oversee any "defects" caused by work( whether teeth, ears, nose, blindness or scars etc). working breeds rated by working terriermen/women. p.s. i'm not a show person but value the standard of any breed as a determining factor of working ability and as a goal for breeders. working should not suffer as a result of showing. I agree with above. I had a Plummer which many in the Plummer world would agree it was a stunning dog, however I was not happy with its hunting ability, at 2yr old I considered giving it to a pet home, ironically it got killed hunting up a deer that run up along a motorway. Have myself judged the odd show in the past and have to bare in mind it is a working show, so scars etc are overlooked, it just tells me it has mixed abit. I feel its not just a case of a terrier looking good but it has to meet the standards as they are there for a reason. If the conformation is wrong you wont get the best out of your dogs. Just look how athletes are built, all built differently to suit their specialist area. Quote Link to post

Fell into this one dint I. Different judges have different opinions even I respect that as I myself have won red rossettes at one show and with the same dog didn`t get a sniff at another. I have on many occasions approached the judge after the show regardless whether I got a place or not and asked the same questions as you`ve asked and ivariably get different answers and opinions. Horses for courses as they say. All i`ll say is regardless of which class is infront of me I would pick the one that looks healthy and closest to the standards and the one I would put under my arm and take home with me. I agree with above. lakeman 12
I don't think that showing dogs in the 'closed' season in no way affects the breed AS LONG AS YOU ARE HONEST WITH YOUSELF. I've shown this dog with great success (now gone) If you graft in winter and show in summer good luck. Personally, i've met some great diggin lads thro' going to shows Edited January 22, 2010 by lakeman Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
My beedygrey x colliegrey, does all running quarry, and works most days of the week... this has made him a top show dog in the ring¬!!! Last season he won 7 1sts out of 8... The EDRD Judge told me it was the best exeample of beddy x he had ever seen.. Every judge what has felt him have commented on how muscley he is, and that he must be a full time working dog, then all have given him a 1st.... Quote Link to post
