Nik_B 3,790
Thanks to the good advice I got it is much appreciated. We picked up our Lab on saturday. It didn't take him long to get his feet under the table and within hours took to steeling shoes, infact steeling anything he can find. We've called him Ollie (probably). I've taken loads of pics but he wont stand still so they're nearly all blured. Something tells me he is going to be a VERY big lad! Quote Link to post

Geoff.C 0
He looks a nice pup Nik, glad to see he has a cage for his own space. Our 14 month lad still likes to go in his cage for his food, and an afternoon nap! You will no doubt be wanting Ollie to work to the gun, so whatever he has in his mouth, best shoes, handbag, wallet, cutlery etc, he is a good boy! Call him in and tell him so, get him confident that coming to you with whatever he has, is the right thing to do. Good luck with him. Quote Link to post

Nik_B 3,790
I gotta say special thanks to the advice I got of THL, especially Rickyspringer and Hendo. I didn't have a clue when i started looking (still dont) and in partticular everytime I look at him I remember what Ricky said about being careful to get too good a breeding....lol...the little bugger is running rings round me already. Secondly yes he is a total meat head! I need to get some kind of scale when i take the pics. He's massive and very very strong. Not what I expected having seen all the dopey local labs down the park. He's already ok with guns. Cheers w2ill keep updating with his (or should say 'I') progress! Its not me training him it's him training me lol. Oh and without sounding too soppy I love him, it's like having a little lad running round the house Quote Link to post

Nik_B 3,790
At the moment he is not very popular, he keeps crapping and weeing in the house sometimes after he's even been out and if you notice the time this was posted the little monster has got me up at 5 am lol. Thought he wanted the toilet so came down and he wont go out. Think he was just bored. Quote Link to post
rickyspringer 15
Nik he looks great, he's a bruiser isn't he...made up for you. Now to the serious talk haha, this present time is going to be very hard for you and the family, you may have a bundle of joy but alot of hard work comes with it as you have noticed, the key is getting some sort of house training going otherwise the mess will get you down. The key is to keep an eye on the dog, whe he starts to circle in the same spot or his behaviour changes ie sniffing more and so on, you get up take him straight outside, even if he doesn't want to-lead him by his collar. wait with him outside and even if it is 15mins wait-stay with him, as soon as he does the business(lots of fuss/really exaggerated) then back in side). Keep doing this very often, when he wakes, after eating/drinking and playing. You will notice your getting up maybe every hour or so at first, then it will gradually slow down.At night I use the method of getting up before the dog asks to, i set my alarm, at say 2am then 4am and wake up 6.30. each time i get up go out with the dog and do the same process, wait til he does something/lots of fuss. then back in his bed and you the same. Don't play with the dog or interract just fuss when he's done the business and bed. Its all a gradual process pal, and i must admit its very difficult at first, but i am a believer in trying to not allow any habits to start as at times they are difficult to break. When he does have an accident don't be heavy with the telling off, you have to catch him in the process and its a firm "NO" bad dog and take him outside. You can't punish him 5mins after or even 2 its got to be immediate and don't use the old myth of rubbing his nose in it, its pure cruelty. Hope i have been of some help, RS PS Keep a big coat at the back door its bloody cold this time of year Quote Link to post
