Hi all repeating this topic in this section as no joy in the training and health section.I have an 8 month old jack pup and cant seem to house train her. Had her from 4 weeks old on the bottle as the bitch had no milk .Usually have no problem and have house trained all previouse pups within a month. She usually does it over night and has now started to take it into her bed and break it up but not eat it.Help needed as misses is getting seriously pissed and dont want to get rid as from seriously good breeding. waited 2 years for this pup. HELP PLEASE

i would only be feeding a dog of this age one meal a day,the problem may be your feeding it to late in the day, feed in morning, and obviously take it out as late at night as you can, then up and out again first thing in morning, maybe you could confine her in the bed at night,it would be reluctant to soil its bedding, not trying to teach you to suck eggs mate, just a thought

Hi ,

I bought a crate for my latest pup i really wish id bought one previosly only cost £30 brand new. She sleeps in it all night no problems at all. I also bought a vet bed this cost a tenner when she wee d on it , it soaked straight through and soaks into the paper and the top stays dry. Also the vet bed is really easy to clean can be chucked in a washing machine and drys really quick. Id really reccomend these to anyone with a new pup she stopped weeing in there in a couple of weeks now she sleeps in there all the time.

defo no expert mate but a crate seemed to work for me they dont like to lie in their own mess , cant blame them. IF you make sure the crate is only big enough to lie in so she cant use a corner as a toilet. Maybe it sounds soft but i slept downstairs on the sofa with the dog in its crate for 2 nights to break its habit of soiling its bed seemed to work everyone is different mate best of luck

Deffinately buy a crate, dogs dont like doing their business where they sleep (in most cases). Take the dog out for the toilet last thing at night, and if it persists, get up middle of the night to take it out. Persistance is key. Try and keep feeding to a routine, dogs like routine.

Quite a lot of dogs that are hand reared or otherwise living with humans at an earlier age than normal are very hard to house train, especially if they believe they are on a par, status wise, as the humans in the house. Pups in a house from a very young age will also invariably have accidents when very young, which also 'helps' them to feel that they can pee or crap wherever they feel like as they get in to the habit of doing it in the house. Also, no matter how well you clean up after them they still have the memory of doing it in a certain place and will always go there again if caught short.

If the dog is playing with/eating or whatever it's own crap then I'd also ask what you are feeding the dog on. I've never known raw food dogs eat their own crap: far more likely if they are being fed manufactured food which is so full of preservatives that it comes out the rear end still smelling of food. Adding pineapple to the food is one way to stop them touching their crap, that's if the dog will eat it in the first place! Apparently it adds a nasty taste/smell to the crap.

But I'd me more looking at the whole dog's behaviour and wonder if there are any other behavioural issues going on. At 8 months old there is a whole lot of hormone changes going on, or has she always done this?

Also, try changing the dog's feeding time so there's no way that she should need to empty herself at night: feed once mid evening and make sure that the dog gets out for a good run round before you go to bed.
