Guest busterdog
Had a good day out with a friend on Saturday with the brother to the dog in my other post "not litter brother". This dog at the minute has hit a stumbling block when it comes to sand, if his quarry has give him the slip by getting on a fair bit in front of him then he gets a bit clueless. As I've said he's only in his first season so he can only get better with age and work. It constantly surprises me how many people who should now better give up on dogs for not doing this and that from the get go but lifes one big learning curve, each one of you wasn't born with the knowledge to drive a car or type on that key board so why should dogs no everything from birth, let me be the first to say I'm a great beleaver in natural ability BUT you have still got to put the stuff in front of the dogs to learn them anything and each different dig or situation should learn them something else. Any way I'm getting away with myself so back to the day out. The dog in question before he was entered late in the summer. He's not over sized and he can get into tight spots it's just the sand that he's let himself down on twice. The earth we had lined up for him was a big old rambling spot with a foot path running right through the middle and a quad track also. We 've dug this spot once before at five foot with my black bitch it was a little stiff but nothin special. The dog was entered and nets were placed, after ten or twenty minutes we switched on the B&F and got a mark at 2.4 not far from where i dug the bitch. I placed the bar in the ground and listened for any baying but could hear nothing, no banging digging or baying. The dog was at that mark for just under one hour slowly pushing up hill, at about the hour mark he moved and was traveling fast when BANG the fox hits the net, the net didnt close and the fox was away Now you may be thinking what a waist of time but to me it was what I'de been waiting for, he had worked through the sand and dug on with his fox, he was learning something for himself. Sorry no pics as we never started to dig. All was not lost as Hounds marked were the fox had got back in, here's some pics of the dog getting his second chance at it. Fox was humanly dispatched. The next earth we dug was a small earth next to a big old place we had dug my friends bitch out of early that morning. Hounds had marked it and the land owner was demanding we dealt with this fox as it was a chicken killer. It looked nothing of a place flat and sandy, we blocked three holes and put in my chocolate bitch and got a mark at 2.6 . We finally got her out at seven to eight foot deep. Shit pictures but we did get a surprise when we shot this fox and you can understand why he was killing chickens. The three legged fox.... Quote Link to post
