blackstairs boy 0
I saw a good deal on a 22 hornet. I was wonderin would this be good on foxes out to about 150 yards? Thinking of buying a vermin rifle and thought this might be the awnser. Would shooting a rabbit/crow with this be obvious overkill? I would be looking for an all round vermin rifle so it is between this and a 17hmr. Which one would you go for? ( i Know that a 17 would not be good on foxes to 150 but would be more than capable at about 70 ) cheers, boy Quote Link to post

I know its hard to say but could you quote a price for a box of rounds for the hornet? I wouldnt be blazin away so i dont mind payin extra for good quality. The 17 is a great little rifle and i am torn between the two. cheers, boy Quote Link to post
The Seeker 3,048
Good mate of mine has hornet and its a great fox round but if your wanting to eat the rabbit then only good for a head shot . i have a .17HMR amd a .22 rimfire amd by far IMO the best round for rabbit is the good old .22 rim fire. sounder 9
i always liked the .22 hornet me old man and a mate has one, top class for foxes ,but the price of bullets for them here in ireland is madness, between 49 to 60 euro's for 50 , the only thing to do is to ring about to see what price you local dealer will charge you , i go for a good .223 before the hornet as the bullets are cheaper cheers sounder Quote Link to post
blackstairs boy 0
I think I ll probably go for a 17 hmr. 60 euro for a box of 22 hornet rounds is not on at all. I could use the 17 on magpies rabbits and crows safely at abount 150 yards and also fox at about 70 so it gives me the best all round vermin rifle in small calibre. cheers boy Quote Link to post

What in your opinion is the best all round vermin rifle in small calibre if it is not the 17hmr? the reason I am put off the 22 hornet is the price of rounds!!! Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
have you thought of .22 wmr?? good distance, good power and still relatively quiet( moderated so i'm told. i had one for years but never had a mod as it was over and under with 20gauge shot). the price of hornet rounds is over the top Quote Link to post

Alan108 0
I've got a .22 hornet and reload for it,13gns Lil'Gun powder and 35gn V-Max bullets.will take out foxes up to 200 yds and does a very good job on rabbits(head shot if you want them for the pot) also ideal for corvids. salukiwhippet 6
As said, hornet and a loading kit. My reloads cost me the same as factory HMR ammo, will do 1/2" groups at 100yds, headshots on bunnies and hares leave a clean carcase. I did have some S&B 45grain softpoints for £7.50/20 and they were ok for chest shots on lagomorphs for the table. Nosler BT's are the daddy on charlie though. .22H will do everything the HMR will do, but much better! James Quote Link to post
njc110381 0
If you want something unusual and can home load try a .17 Ackley Hornet. Same size bullet as the HMR but more than 1000FPS faster! It's amazing! The .22 Hornet is also good if you can home load? If not go for a .22WMR. The HMR was too light for Fox in my experience. rory 58
I also shoot a hornet, get cheap factory ammo (Prvi Partizan SP 45gn) for £9.50 for a box of 50 from my local dealer Quote Link to post
