Kay 3,709
Can you explain the difference between rough coated and broken coated? Thanks. Not sure if there is a difference , might just be 2 terms for the same meaning
Attack Fell Terrier 864
I'd say that Rough Coated is when the coat is close to the dogs body but coarse. Broken coated is longer and hangs from the dogs body. That's how I look at it anyhow.
sadie121 0
OK thanks. And when the dog's moult the coats would shed the same? I'm only familiar with smooth coated whippets which is why I asked. Thanks. I'd say that Rough Coated is when the coat is close to the dogs body but coarse. Broken coated is longer and hangs from the dogs body. That's how I look at it anyhow.

sadie121 0
Thanks for the advice. I hope to get a bedlington/whippet bitch now so the coat will be anyone's guess!
Malt 379
I thought broken coated was when the coat was a mixture of longer, rough hair and smoother/shorter hair, longer/rougher in some areas than others.
Attack Fell Terrier 864
Conflicting opinions I see, I've always thought a rough coat would be coarse and thick? A Broken coat as I've always known it is just a scruffy coat not necessarily coarse and could be soft? What ever the case, I prefer smooth coats anyhow lol.
Swampy 147
Here you go folks.; As always google is always your friend! Broken Coat A coat the is very similar to a smooth coat but has trace hair on the head, face, legs or body. A broken coat needs minimal alterations to be ready for the show ring. They will generally only require a quick tidying up. A broken coat should not be soft - it should be harsh to provide protection from the elements. Rough Coat A coat that has excess trace hair on the head, face, legs or body. The hair is longer than on a smooth or broken coat. A rough coat requires more alterations than a broken coat to be ready for the show ring. A rough coat should not be soft or wooly - it should be harsh to provide protection from the elements. rgds Swampy CombNING his shaggy locks
