foxylady 1
can anyone give me some advice on what age to start and how to do it. cheers. yeah 8 weeks can work, we tried with our collie X, but she didnt want to know til 12 weeks!!lots of them retrieve well at 8 weeks+. we first used socks and small toys, then she liked to retrieve baseball caps haha. now she retrieves canvas dummies or rabbit dummies straight to hand. i think really, the basic thing is not to bore the pup- only do 3 or 4 retrieves because he/she will get bored of it soon and not want to know! i retrieve train in hallway/landing by throwing the dummy to the top of the stairs then waiting for her to retrieve it. the reward should be the dummy, but iv found iv had to use treats sometimes- whichever works though! atb Quote Link to post

He run up and took it off her. For months after that if i was out with my mate, she'd circle us about 6' away. Took some real braking. Just shows the slightest thing can cock it all up Quote Link to post

ADAM C 193
I ve done it with pups ,getting the dummy etc tieing a long piece of string to it throw the dummy and slowly pull it back in when the pup has hold coaxing your pup towards you with encouragement do this a few times each day getting him used to bringing it back and getting praise for it.In time take off the string and start the same process but without the string i have found this to work a treat for me,maybe worth a try....... smiffyuk2003 5
ive been teaching my pups retrieve since they were 9 wk old, there 16 wk old now and still do it... about 3-5 retrieves a day is what i do, keeps them interested. what i do is sit infront of there kennel as they always run back to that, so they get used to running back to me, i can now do it in open fields and they come straight back. get an old sock, tie some string to it, swing it about to get them interested, release it, as soon as they pick it up call them back. dont be surprised if they run about all over first few tries, this is fun for them, but keep calling and they will eventually return. hope this helps smiffyuk09 Quote Link to post
sambam 8
i sickend my pup with retrive and belive me its hard to get it back. he just takes the dummy to the edge of the field. in the house he will blind stay while i hide the dummy then go and find it and bring it straight to hand perfect everytime just not in the field, but hopefully he will get the idea agian Quote Link to post
