Attack Fell Terrier 864
If you get them jabbed properly then they're covered for Weil's Disease. Cow's and rats carry the disease. Quote Link to post
Wild_and_Irish 11
There are a lot of diseases dogs can get, most of them we know nothing about and can't protect against, sometimes we just put them down as something else, so don't go blaming the lad who owned the dog. Quote Link to post
POG 17
slightly off topic but i have a nuttal dog that when has been to ground the last 2 times (after taking quite a bit of punishment )has been cleaned up and put on antibiotics has started healing nicely ,but after about a week ltr has turned white like aneamic with a blue tongue and gums ,still eating plenty and drinking .eyes are still sparking and is not dehidrated but is not good in his self after about 2 days he starts pinking back up and is now back to is normall health after a week or solid rest . thought it was shock after first time but when it happened again and after a week of being worked has got me baffelled any one else had this experiance ,he works his game hard and doe,s give it his all so wondered if it could be down to bruising or internal bleeding .he having a good long rest now before he goe,s back to work probs leave him now to next season to be on safe side .apart from that he,s back to his normal health and full of himself again ......any advice would be appreciated ... , when they working under ground they will av good deal of adrenalin an stress as well as there own antibodys that they will pass thru there kidneys aswell ,a dont start um on antibiotics 4 the 1st 3days after a do, jus saltwater and powder and let there own antibody work 4 a few days after c how it affects him could be too much to deal with in his system try it an c if that sort it mate Edited January 16, 2010 by POG Quote Link to post
higgins 75
Weil's disease is always a risk,if not to the vaccinated dog then certaily it's possible for it to be passed on to it's owner, best to take precautions, Higgins. Quote Link to post

Waz 4,265
the organism, that causes the disease leptospirea, has about 7 or 8 varients of the disease, and although there are vacines available for one or two of the most common strains, just because the dog is vacinated against these does not gaurentee immunity to the other strains. so the guy could have in theory been up to date with his dogs jabs Ditto, the vaccines dont cover all the strains of weils. & it is due to the vaccine being dodgy (for weils) that the pups are jabbed twice at the vets. Hey DF, If your dog is sensitive to penicillin try using cotrimoxazole, a combination of sulphamethoxazole (a sulphur compound) and trimethoprim (which is not sulphur based). it works on both Gram negative and gram positive infections, it might work for your dog , also if he's chewed up and exhausted instead of giving him water straight off give him some water soluble Electrolytes, and also have water available once you've given him the Electrolytes( the minerals and salts make them thirsty ) this will dramatically improve his recovery, the farm shops sell Electrolytes its used for calves scouring and its pretty cheap , hope this helps Quote Link to post
