Wild_and_Irish 11
With the conditions the way they were with a strong west wind and lashing rain and rabbits recovering from the snow I couldnt say no to taking the dog out, he was doing all the training I asked of him and you could see how driven he was when he chased anything and I knew if I gave him the chance he would deliver. So I lifted the battery out of the quad (couldn't find a better charger ) connected the striker and away I went. I hadn't gone 20 yards down the footpath before a fox jumped over the wall in front of me and the dog, the fox was more suprised than me! The dog was goin ballistic at the end of the lead but I'd have to let him go for obvious reasons (for now anyway.). I hadn't gone 50 yards further up the road and I shone the lamp into a promising field but there was nothing there apart from another fox, (too many at this rate). I walked up behind the chapel and on to the biggest field for miles, but the trouble was all the rabbits were somehow lamp shy, despite me bein the only lad in the town with a lurcher. We finally got close to one which was hesitating on goin to cover, I had my hand on the dogs collar ready to let the buckle out, then the dog picked up a scent and pulled quickly and was off before he saw the rabbit, I managed to call him back before he had gone 10 yards from me but havng to shine the lamp on him had gotten rid of all the rabbits, feeling pissed off at myself for funking up and being soaked to the skin I thought about going home- but I was out now and already wet so I moved on. Into my cousins field about half a mile away I went, I flicked on the light and saw two pairs of eyes, walking up I kept them out in the open by shaking the light in the direction they were tryin to move and then I got within range, one took off the dog pulled and I let him go, in this fielld about 30 yards wide he coursed it up and down 5 or 6 times before the rabbit completely out-turned him and squatted down at the bottom of a thorn bush before slipping through the hedge to safety. It was a decent attempt but still no result.........0/1 I jumped over the fence and into the next field the dog comin behind, I flicked on the light and lookin back at me another 2pair of eyes, keeping them in the centre I walked down slowly, the dog was tuned in now and looking up, about 20 yards from them 1 start jogging towards us, I could feel the dog pulling but I waited then he turned and started running but with the dog in hot pursuit!! He turned up the field then down, then down this repeated itself 6 times but the rabbit couldn't make up enough distance in the bends finally the dog was pushing it up the field again and he was bending for it then behind a wind bush they both went, f'n and blindin I took offlike a shorter whiter Usain Bolt to see what had happened .........then from behind the bush he trotted, rabbit in mouth yassssss......... To say I was happy was a massive understatement : D :D Nothing can top that feeling of seeing the pup you've rared and trained finally doing what he had been born to do. Good job making it this far! atb Tarlach Picture off phone (lens was very foggy) Edited January 16, 2010 by Wild_and_Irish Quote Link to post
