definatly a lurcher mate, smarter can take more of a variety of quarry and also have better feet 90% of te time.

Im going to be getting a new lurcher as soon as something suitable comes along, and my question is this: In terms of trainability, living with it, hunting ability etc. which one of these would people choose:

colliexgreyhound (1st cross or 3/4 grey)

colliexwhippet (1st cross or 3/4 whippet)

 

These are the dogs i am considering and i think some collie blood is a definate in my final choice.

 

The land i work at the moment is a mix of small flat fields, larger hilly fields, fields that could almost be described as moor land and everything between.

 

I have a pure whippet at the moment and although she has pace to burn she lacks a bit of stamina and possibly a bit of common sense!

 

Im after a dog between 22-24" as i think on the land i work and the quarry (only rabbits) a smaller lurcher would be the best choice.

 

Also the dog will be used for lamping mainly but also ferreting (when i get hold of some new ones) and general mooching.

iv had both in the past and now have a saluki x grey. and a pup kelpie x. when hare coursing was legal i think the long dog was the usual choice but now i have gone for the lurcher as i ferret rabbits and i find the big saluki x a bit slow off the mark on big fields and he isnt bright bless him, he catches ok but just ok.

 

saying all of that the best rabbit dog i ever saw was an almost pure greyhound with a tiny bit of collie in it, he was 28" a superb dog long dead now, i worked with his owner many a night in ireland we took ten plus rabbitts most nights and he was dynamite off the bock when feretting.

 

It my experience that great dogs are just born sometimes no matter what the cross.

Its a question that cant really be answered. Again because of the terrain it is working... Put a saluki on the fens/cambridge/norfolk, anywhere with big open gluiding fields and it would out run any lurcher.

 

Take it to the moorland of lancs, the rocks of yorkshire, mountains of scotland and it would almost be no point it being there. Thats where your lurcher comes into play...

 

And as for great dogs, well, lines are very important. Tho i think you would call a great dog, something that before the ban . Ran and caught 100plus deer a season, 2 out of 3 courses won, even 3 in 3. And well, you wouldnt really lamp just rabbits with such a dog..

there no best cross just get dogs thta are tested for generaitions and do what you like , saw good dogs in all sorts of breeds, for edible game ,youll not go past collie type to saluk type of good qaulity stock ,tried and tested ,sawseveral and very handy all round dogs, but must have genuine good bloodlines

A saluki/grey is a lurcher.. the majority of lurchers have longdog in them, thats what forms a lurcher....

 

 

You bring a saluki to run hares around this area (preban of course) and a good hare lurcher would beast it...
