harrygrey382 1
Well I've filled my variation forms in and sent them off. So I thought I'd jump the gun, try my luck and have put a deposit on a new BRNO BO98. After a fair bit of googling I haven't picked up anything, at least in english anyway. The dealer says it is a new model, not related to the ZKK or 550 actions. It's built on a full Mauser 98 action made by BRNO. Has anyone heard of them? The dealer says BRNO have now closed down and sold all equipment, so these new ones are pretty thin on the ground, and certainly will get more so. It looks like they haven't really made it into the english speaking world, but they're a 98 so parts etc. aren't an issue. I went for a walnut American stock. He's worked the (single set) trigger, made the safety scope friendly and they're factory screwcut. I'm pretty stoked as it's my first CF rifle and have done a painful amount of reading on mauser actions and their versions and decided I HAD to have a full '98, with a ZKK coming close second. I went for 243 (FEO and land clearing reasons), but already thinking one day will rebarrel to 7x57 (same length action on this). In fact, what are peoples opinions on mausers in general on this forum? If anyone is interested, here is a slovakian link with pictures. And if anyone can read slovakian, a translation (other than a fairly useless online one) would be great http://www.hunterbogdan.sk/brno98.html Quote Link to post
danebrewer10 6
I think the mauser is a great design, obviously, as it has stood the test of time and is still being produced, but the controlled round feed and full length extractor is overrated IMO, there is this opinion that if you don't have a CRF rifle hunting dangerous game or in law enforcement you will die, this is simply not the case, the US army has done fine with their M24, based on a push feed rem 700 and that has been doing the business for donkeys years likewise the rifle you always see in films is the rem 700. having a proper mauser action could be a cool talking point, but unless you have had the safety modified, as you have, i reckon it would just be a pain in the arse, otherwise the Winchester mod 70 or Kimber 84M rifles would be good choices if you want a mauser style action with the 3 position safety which is more scope friendly. but at the end of the day it's not what everyone else thinks, it's what you like and what works for you! Cheers DB Thanks for the comments. In all my searching of the web about various mausers and CRF rifles the thing that came up most was heated arguements of CRF and pushfeed. It was boring. I want a mauser partly because it's the oldest (so stood the test of time the most) BA style, also it's inherent strength and reliability. But mainly because I like the look and feel of them! danebrewer10 6
no problem, I think the push feed/CRF debate is much like the AK 47/AR debate, each side has it's fighters who think theirs is the only option. how much does the bolt wobble at it's fully retracted position, I haven't had the opportunity to handle an original mauser.... cheers DB Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
i have had two m98( one in 30.06spr and the other 8x57is). the 30.06 had a scope on and shot like hell, very happy with it( cost around 600 euro from frankonia jagd in germany brand new) the 8x57 had no scope, the barrel cut down to 45cm as a follow up/driven shooting rifle( i had the saftey converted to a "pull to cock" and broad leaf sights fitted, sling to the muzzle etc etc) in total about 250 euro) this one had alot of wobble in the action but never let me down( beleive me it got dirty, frozen, wet and generally mishandeled). a cracking rifle that i would reccomend to anyone.
