bird 9,872
On Wednesday, here, a lady died under the ice after going onto a local lake after her boxer. I'd met this lady and her dog a few times out exercising; you hear about these things every year there's a bad freeze but it hits home when it's somewhere you know well, and somebody you've spoken with and waved to. The dog was found safe; it seems they usually are, but it does beg the question: what would you do? Mally obviously went in... I prefer to avoid the possibility by not going near frozen water if I can help it, it scares me silly. Good point, most dogs that have gone in [ice] normally are ok ,even they have been in for 10 mins. But a person in that time, would be in Big trouble. I saw it one year when i was beating, a lab chased a pheasant [runner ] right into feckin pool . It took us 4 blokes [15]mins to get it out, we were wet+froze. The dog rubbed down with a towel, and happy to go in again . Dont forget dogs are alot tougher with cold+wet than humans will ever be. So when+if a dog goes in [dont panic] right away??? sambam 8
your a luck lad mally and fair play for goin in it was on the news in my area a bloke went into the river to save his 2 dogs and died, people were tring to help him out with branches but he wouldnt let go of his dogs glad you and the pup are ok sam Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Brave but not stupid. Anyone who really loves their dogs would try and save them: it would take a very strong minded person to just stand and watch their dog go under. If anyone called my dogs to them they would get such a ear battering it ain't true: I don't like my dogs going to strangers at the best of times: hope this woman gets her's. Quote Link to post
steveS.Yorks 161
The estate lakes near me have been pretty frozen up for a few weeks, ive kept at a reasonable distance from them myself,a lad with a Lab cross walked past me one day over xmas and 5 minuits later i heard him screaming at the dog,it had run around 50 yds out onto the ice chasing some ducks, luckily the ice held and the dog came back but not a nice experiance for any of us. Glad you and your dog were ok Mally, people die nearly every year trying to save dogs, makes you think. Quote Link to post
runforyourlife 361
Glad your dog is safe. Altho canals arent usually over 5ft deep(but your not much bigger, lol) its getting disorientated once under the ice... The woman must of been abit simple to do what she did. Especially how thin the ice must have looked if you could brake it with a stick.... Quote Link to post
