Poodle x Greyhound

Recommended Posts

Notice people knocking poodle x greyhounds in the countrymans weekly thread...... dont if you havent seen the dog work,i use a labradoodle for a gun dog he is spot on and also scores well at the scurrys and trials in the summer. He is enormous though built like a tank

i also have a golden retriever crossed with a poodle and she is a demon in cover as hard a nails and an excllent water dog she can hunt all day harder than a springer.A bit more wilful than the labradoodle

both dogs were experiments to see if it was a credible working dog x so i have gone out of my way to work them hard.

Cant see any reason at all why a poodle x greyhound wouldnt be a superb lurcher in the right hands

brains, coat, stamina, good feet.poodles have it all going on.

Come on lads an lasses come out of the closet get your pictures up

or tell me why this cross isnt credible :boxing:

I'm glad your pleased with your Poodle cross but why not use a pure bred S Poodle. My Standard has come up against labrdoodles in a few disciplines, they didn't come close.

i dont know if im right but aint a poodle a french working dog,and if you shaved all the hair off of one there body shape is very like a lurcher, i have herd of the cross in the past and herd good things about them but how good they really are i wouldnt like to comment on as i have never seen one run

The poodle is conidered one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world next to the border collie. they are originatd from french gundogs, But ive never seen a purebred work.

They are from the ones i know of a bit flighty but you cant tire them out, very lightly built they have a good build for a potential cross,

but i wouldnt pay £800 for a gold plated dog!!

in answer to your post Helen it was out of my hands my missus Lynn wanted a cuddly dog instead of bony lurchers or bull breeds. i thought why not, the girl who bred the doodles has a kennel of excllent working labs and unusually working golden retrivers. so i agreed to have doodles on the basis that they would be trained as gundogs

The blokes i know in the game nearly fell off their stools laughing so it became a bit of a mission

Lynn agreed so that so thats how it started, if she had wanted a standard i would have happily trained it the same way i really admire the poodle its a much maligned breed for no apparent reason?

well i bought one of the typp ratcher pups advertised in the cmw, did'nt pay £350 though, paid a reasonable price for a lurcher but won't say what. He's 4 1/2 month old now, and coming on nicely. Had him out with the ferrets a couple of times, seem's to be picking up the idea, although we have'nt bolted anything. so it kind of makes it a bit harder lol.

I want a good all rounder, mostly for ferreting mouching and lamping. At the minute he measures about 22" tts, so i'm thinking he might make a sizeable dog. My last lurcher was a collie x and was a good dog, but she could be a bit temperamental, hated strangers, treat the kids with indifference, and soon picked up on tension in your voice. Now Marley the pup is brilliant with the kids, which to me is important seen as he lives in the house, and so is pretty much a family dog as well as a worker. He's soft and loving with my 7 year old daughter and plays rough and fights with my 5 year old son, which is nice to see. And he also seems pretty much bomb proof and does'nt seem to scare easy.

I know it's early day's, but at the minute he seems to be coming along great, and taking to training quite well. I have a lot of hope for the future with him, we'll see

Good to hear you pup is coming on well. Cant see why that cross shouldn't be a useful dog in the field.

PS love your picture but think you need a smaller ferret box for your daughter, lol.

regards

Ian

lol, yeah can't imagine why she complained, it was her first time out with me and the ferrets and she really enjoyed it, just wish i could have caught her something
