what scope best for .223 .243

Recommended Posts

hi guys

just searching for a little help and opinions from some other forum users.

just received my licence back with two new additions, a .223 and .243, so wanted to know what scope would be suitable for both rifles, im intending to get my .223 first which will be mainly used for fox, then the .243 which will be for deer and fox.looking to use the scope on the .223 then move it over to the .243 when i get one.so ideally looking to have really good scope for the .243 but will do what i need for now on the .223.

hope this makes sense to all you other readers,i know what i meant anyway ha ha ha.thanks for taking time to help.

Well...... fist couple of questions

- Whats the budget to spend

- Are you looking for fixed power or variable

To be honest the list of Optics avaliable is endless, so just need those two answered - to narrow the search a tad.

Cheers Sam

No probs Lee, right then, dose the £500 need to cover Rings & scope base??? As these will set you back some descent dollar if you want quality which i sugest you aim for.

to start - There are a lot of people that are fans of 8x56 scopes that is a fixed power scope, now these figures mean 8 times magnification by a 56mm objective lens. Its a very good combo scope thats as good for deer stalking and lamping -so could ideally cover both needs for .223 & .243.

But will depend on how far you want to push your rifle, ive only used a mates 8x56 on his .223 so cant really comment on how i get on with it, although he gets some very good long range results.

Where as variable... where to start, im a big fan of variable, i shoot a .204 Ruger. Very fast Very flat and very accurate, i find that i need a scope that can help me get the best out of the calibre, the scope i got at the me is a Konus Mpro 8.5x32-52 (meaning my magnification will range is adjustable from 8.5 up to 32) with a 30mm main tube & a set of Warne rings. That means a huge range of magnification settings. Its what id call a pretty cheap scope for around the £260 and personally i get on very well with it, gets a bit foggy at 32x mag but i never have it wound up that much anyways, i didnt expect it to be along side the likes of Zeiss or Schmidt and Bender.

Ive got an IOR scope to replace this one and should be here in a couple of days. Its a 6-24x50 with a 35mm main tube.

Most people would agree that the finest optics are European made, there are so many to list..... and thats without the American names.

This is all in my opinion

Personally id just have a good look through the net forums, go to your local gun shop, talk to as many people and ask loads of questions, to build up your own idea of what you need.

Hope this helps a bit :bye:

i'd personally go for a varaible power scope myself, 500 quid should get you a fairly good scope, or a quality second hand optic...

4x16 or 6.5 x 20 power will give you a good choice, look for finger adjustable, or sniper type turrets, for ease of use...

this scope mag range will suit both the .223 and .243,

good luck with your new purchases...

Snap.

I think I would get the 243 first and spend the most on it once you start felling deer and fox with that you won't go back to the 223 I have a 222 and 2506 the 222 hasn't been out of the cabinet in a year and I use my 2506 every day as for scopes European is the way I use swarovski 3x12x50 set on 12 all the time got 3 of them 1 on .22 1 on .222 and one on my 2506 I use nightforce on my 300 rum

hi there

thanks for your comments, ideally i did want to get the 243 only and be done with it,but i have a stipulation stating i need an experienced shot with me at all times, where the 223 i do not,as im going to be doing a lot of fox shooting on my own permission thought i would get this first then try and get the stipulation off my fac at a later date, still get to go deer stalking, and it would be good to have my own gun,but its about wanting to get out straight away and the money factor of course(or i would buy both guns and set up now.....ha ha ha ha)cheers for the comments.

I cannot claim to speak from experience of the scopes, but I have used Nikon cameras. With due respect to those advocating European glass, Nikon lenses are at least the equal of any other, superior to the great majority. The build quality is similar. They build them for the press snappers and they are paparazzi proof! I just had a look in Guntrader and there is a Monarch III, 3-12 x 42 for sale s/hand at £285.

The guys who have posted in about their Nikons all seem to be well chuffed. Just a thought.

I have had a nikon scope and it was a cracking bit of glass for the money but isnt upto the quality of the s&b i have now as its replacement.. In terms of build quality or glass.

If you can get a chance to try a few types of scope ie fixed or variable you could save yourself alot of grief and money.

Personally if I were buying a scope to use for mainly foxing/deer I would get an 8x56 or similar by the best manufacturer you can find (you can easily pick up a used hung s&b 8x56 for £500) as you aint gonna be shooting that far and a quality optic like this will last a lifetime, if you want to shoot out a bit further say 250+ get something variable with a bit more mag.

For example I use a 8x56 on my fox/deer .243 and a 3-12x50 on my 20tac (although I will be upping the mag on the 20tac soon to 6-24)

Also bear in mind that if you want to shoot crows and such at long distance you'll need a fairly thin reticle so it doesnt hide your quarry!!

Sorry thats probably not made it any easier!!
