Try writing an article every week for a number of years and see how you get on. I'll bet £100 that you can't do it for a year let alone several. Anyone who does it for that long is allowed to have the odd weak article. Or have you never had a bad day at the office.

 

It is interesting to note that the none of the experienced members say owt bad about Penny Taylor, it is almost like they know something.

i did mention on the last cmw thread we had but can anyone remember the sporting dog weekly that was before cmw.

a4 size mag used to buy it on my school lunch breaks then read it in afternoon lessons.

Sub's run out a couple of years ago and, to be honest, got fed up with reading the same shite week in, week out. And all about £££££££ for shite scatter bred dogs for sale.

A very old lurcher breeder from Norfolk (M.D.) used to call it "THE BRAGGERS COMIC"...... how true!

Not so long ago I posted that I had phone CW and asked them if they would publish an article on digging to fox and badger in eastern euope. Their reply was absolutely so long as it really is in EE and could I get photos So maybe the problem is that they can't print stories BASED in this country.... So base them somewhere else

Inan is right . How can you write about the same limited subject week after week and find something significantly new to say? .I have a copy of CW from about 12 years ago .With a change of date it could be re-published next week and I don't think anyone would notice . I doubt that many of the puppies advertised in the classifieds are still for sale though.

Field sports articles are like Robin Hood films or Westerns -once someone has seen one or two they know the basic plots of just about every other film of the same genres .

Occasionally someone approaches what might otherwise be yet another mundane or generic article from a different perspective and injects a bit of flair ,humour or intelligent arguement into their piece .Established writers can get away with doing this and still manage to have articles accepted for publication and it such rare gems that save CW from total blandness.

Sadly unknown authors who dare to swim against the tide risk being labelled as "dangerous"and rarely are given a chance to bring new perspectives to some well -worn subjects that cry out for rejuvination.

Editors,understandably, seem to prefer to continue promoting slightly grey but safe, middle-of-the-road articles that neither offend or unduly excite readers but sell steadily enough to justify sticking with the formulae.

On the odd occasion that I've bought Cw in the last few years I could be forgiven for thinking that there is an editorial policy that patronises the less imaginative reader, edits out any hint of controversy and suppressess any idea that hunting and pest control might possibly contain elements of excitement and -God forbid -humour!..

 

To be fair .Possibly old fogies like myself who remember the slightly more edgy days of the Shooting News require something a little more spicy to excite our jaded senses.

Plenty of folk buy the CW and credit for its success must be given to the brave people who are willing to put their necks on the block , submit articles and successfully meet the editorial criteria . Good luck to them .

It always amazes me how people will attempt to knock anyone who has achieved a high level of success, in any walk of life, and the lurcher world is certainly no exception..But thats life, and life at times can have all the escence of a shit sandwitch..novices seem to be running the show at times, and novices teaching novices is always a dangerous thing

That said, where I live you can find dozens of magazines on sex/naked women but we have no magazines on hunting. You brits are lucky.

Very easy for the naive and the ignorant to knock the CW,firstly the editors would be prosecuted if they printed without editing some of the garbage you read on here, if it aint for you then dont buy it, lets not knock the people who write in the CW, especially if we dont know the people doing it.

 

As some have tried to explain, it aint all black and white, (excuse the pun but some is in colour), If its that easy then lets see your attempts at writing and hopefully the standard will improve ( I think not).

As for Penny Taylor, Ihave known her for some years and she is a very knowlegable lady and could teach many supposed lurcher men a thing or two.

 

Live and let live and just because it dont suit you doesnt mean that it doesnt suit others and before anyone comments, yes I have contributed articles to the CW in the past. All the best WR.

spot on innan you obviously know penny taylor same as i do and your spot on with your remarks very knowlegable dog person whether working them general looking after them or giving them first aid. when i ran with her and against her in comps her dogs were always hard to beat and always in superb condition and your right andy her partner has never been into huskies but lives for his ferreting and is also a very good dogman why people that dont know anything about people spout shit on forums is beyond me and going back to c weekly bought it first time today for years and your right its crap with the same adverts and advertising but you cant blame that on the writers as their hands are tied in what they can write about with the law as it is . but the editor and their backup could and should look at ways of improving it because it aint the best in its present format thats for sure.

Is it just me or is the Countrymans Weekly getting worse and worse?! I have around 65 of these now and i have been scanning through them to see that the articles are getting weaker and weaker! Espeically Penny Taylor whom i have absolutley no respect for at all. Her articles are complete rubbish and contain nothing of any interest to us lurchermen. I scan through seeing stupid titles such as "are tails important in a lurcher"! "A dogs eye sight" And my most loved "Working a bobbery pack" A picture at the top of the article showing more than a dozen dogs! Who is the real puppy dealer here? Give me her money and i will write articles on what the lurchermen of the country want to here not this rubbish. As for Ray Charles he is the same "Deer stalking" Only ever shot one DEER! I have given up entirely on reading his articles now and thinking of picking up another copy of this costly rubbish. The letters page does noone any favors either only last week was there a letter heading called "The lamping season is upon us" Basically a letter to the editor saying how scumbags and jippos come from the town onto farmers feilds killing deer,badgers and foxes stealing tractor batteries and nicking red diesel COME ON PEOPLE WAKE THE f**k UP!!! why would they even publish that! Its shooting all of us in the foot and giving the farmers and land owners that we are asking permission for to break the law on their land and steal from them!!!

WOULDNT BE 2 HARSH ON PENNY TAYLOR THOUGH BECAUSE AS 1 WELL KNOWN LURCHER WRITER SAID 2 ME YEARS AGO "it,s almost impossible 2 write on a subject that hasnt been discussed a 100 times beforehand!" & WHEN U THINK ON IT MOST ARTICLES HAVE A TOUCH OF DEJA VU ABOUT THEM. COUNTRYMANS WKLY HAVE MADE IT QUITE PLAIN THAT THEY KNOW THEY ARE BEING WATCHED SO ANY ARTICLE THAT IS A TOUCH SPICY AS REGARDS THE LAW, WONT MAKE THEIR PAGES. YOU JUST HAVE 2 LOOK AT THE 4 SALE ADS & U WONDER WHAT THE HELL ARE SOME LURCHERMEN OUT THERE BREEDING & KEEPING. BEST 2 VOTE WITH UR FEET, I JUST DONT BUY IT COS ITS A WASTE OF £2 MEASLY POUND.
