Its not that difficult for me to lay it up and email it out. It will take time to get an initial layout and style.

Its just if people can submit articles and photos. Finding people to do that would be great.

Would be good to cover all aspects of hunting with dogs etc and also couple that with some equipment reviews and other stuff.

Would be good to get people to do introduction articles as well, etc someone to do a guide to whippet racing, falconry tips and tricks etc.

What do you think? Maybe people should post what they want from a free hunting mag as expectations may not meet reality!

Still i think that it is viable.

The Countryman`s Weekly is made up of about 90% of the same adverts which are in it every week. The other 10% are storys in the usual limited catagories and the classified adverts. So really your paying for that 10% which is usually in there to fill the space.I actually saw it tonight in my local petrol station and thought I`ll only be pissed off if I buy it and read it only to find it contains exactly what I believed it would(even though it`s only £2).

the countrymans is exactly the same as our local newspaper small percentage of anything remotely newsworthy and the rest adverts same every week . as i posted earlier sent a letter to letters page and to editor and got no reply and letter not published the problem is theres nothing else other than edrd magazine which is superb but the problem with that is its monthly and a long time to wait in between .mind you with thl who needs the countryman.

I enjoy buying the odd copy off C.Weekly, and i don't think its changed that much either over the years and its the only magazine that i know of that i can buy off the shelf. Plus its probably the magazine that helped you on your way when you first started out...it certainly introduced me to the lurcher scene.

I also think it must be hard to turn out different subjects all the time that are going to appeal to everyone. Theres only so many questions and answers regarding working lurchers, you only have to look at this site to see how many questions are repeated, nothing wrong with that at all, but think how hard it must be to come up with top class articles that are going to appeal to begginer and experienced lurcher enthusiast week in and week out.

I hope it keeps going.

 C'mon now guys,..

Penning articles for a sporting magazine ain't all plain sailing...

Most mags have an editorial policy, and an agreed set of rules which effects the content, and the overall mood of the publication...

And the truth of the matter is,....lads that are ultra keen hunting men,..and who have their own agendas, as to what is real,.and what is not,...are seldom willing to put their opinions and experiences down on paper...

And as customers,.they don't actually purchase many books, mags or dvds either,..so,..in short,..their personal thoughts don't realy mean much to anyone trying to knock out mags, and earn a buck..

I don't get to see many magazines these days..but I'm told that they are all made up of fabulous full colour images and exciting photographs,.and these alone will enhance an create a powerful image for the writer's words...

All this is a far cry from mags of the early 1980's with their poorly photographed, box brownie, misty, murky, faraway,.black and white images, that made everyone look like 'pin men',.. with pin dawgs'...

Nowadays,...it appears to be much easier to get the words and stories across... :D

Whatever....the fact remains,..if something is not to one's taste (like Semolina)....then simply walk on by, and give it a swerve....

Keep chilled now brothers,....all the best,.CHALKWARREN... :drink:

There speaks the voice of experience.

I used to write in the EDRD,coursing articles mostly, but with the ban, that window is closed, unless someone does an "all our yesterday's "kind of thing.

The ban has brought severe limitations on what can be put down on paper and published. How often can you make" took Spot up on the dales and caught 8 rabbits" sound interesting?

Regular contributors have to come up with different articles week after week ,it ain't as easy as some seem to think.

Some one said they enjoyed the article about famous coursing dogs,so did I ,

but there are flies in the ointment.

If you write retrospectively, about days gone by and famous ,dogs/dog men ,you have to be pretty sure that those whose names are mentioned are happy to have them," in the frame".

A well known dog man .Chalky ,has just had dogs stolen, fame brings its own drawbacks.

And I've only mentioned him by name because he has allready been named in the thread about stolen dogs.

Penny Taylor has run and worked dogs for more years than a lady would probably want to admit to .

Penny has a wealth of experience of all hunting with dogs ,and a very good knowledge of canine welfare and medical problems.

I would guess that she does as much work with her dogs as just about any body on here.

As I recall Penny takes her dogs out in relays,so many at a time ,she lives for her dogs ,ferrets, and the work that they do.

I would estimate that Penny has more working trophies and rosettes for her dogs ,than anyone who was in the same club as her.

Penny's partner ,A is a very good dog man and a lamping and ferreting aficionado, he does not breed dogs ,except for personal use, and definitely not huskies!

To all those fed up with the CW, why not try and improve it by writing your own article?

It's the "only game in town",on a weekly basis, perhaps if enough running dog men wrote up pointing out they did not like the way the paper's focus had shifted ,the articles, and emphasis on working dogs might improve?

What can you lose?

I do think it has drifted towards the Shooting Times end of the market,in the old days it was a more "meat and potatoes", publication, with excellent articles about dogs doing what they were bred for,but as I said legal limitations have put constraints on things.

Sorry this post is so long,,just pointing out that it isnt as easy as it appears , trying to please everybody on a weekly basis.

By the way you won't get fat on what the CW pays for an article ,so if you do contribute ,don't give up the day job.
