Rifleman88 28
my fac is due any time now and I've got 17hmr .22lr and .223 down. If I'm shooting 15 bunny's to every fox wat would be the ideal calibre to go for ? Cheers lads, Nathan. Quote Link to post
Colster 1
Depends really... if you're lamping and aiming to get these 15 rabbits in one evening, then .22LR all the way. Under the lamp it's easy to get within 60 yards of a bunny and being so silent you'll often manage to shoot one without spooking the others so you can shoot again. If you're looking to eat what you kill then again .22LR. HMR or .223 will do more meat damage and even a head shot means you have a very messy corpse to cart round with you for the rest of the night. I never have myself but I gather people do take the odd fox with .22LR, usually with HV ammo. A mate of mine carries a couple of 10 shot mags with subs in and a 5 shot with CCI Stingers in case he spots a fox. Quote Link to post
njc110381 0
It depends how soon you plan to buy the next rifle? If I had those calibres listed I'd be aiming to end up with a .22lr and .223, and one for one vary the .17HMR for a Deer calibre later. Get the .22. It's cheap to shoot so you can go out and shoot loads of rounds until you get over the initial excitement of having the gun without breaking the bank! The .22 set up will probably also be the cheapest. What guns do you like the look of? Generally it's good to spend the same on the scope as you will on the rifle, but with a rimfire that's not so important. Don't skimp on the glass though, you'll suffer for it! Quote Link to post
