tdavepat 8
Just in from that new permission I earned last week. Although it was pockmarked with open sets, I wanted to give it a whirl under the lamp. I recce'd it this afternoon and it was soft underfoot with very little in way of slush. During the day It only took a couple of minutes to get there tonight by car and it took me way less than an hour to get round. In very still conditions, Lewis, my whippet/grey smacked 8 rabbits in about 15 minutes. (2 with myxi). His best chase was one that he ripped through a clump of brambles several times in pursuit. I thought he was going to tear himself up when he first hit them and switched the lamp off to make him back off. But he didn't and I could still hear him smashing in and out through the branches. I switched it on again just in time to see him tumble out and back in again to pin it. The brambles were like this. He caught another as it had already disappeared down into its burrow. He seemed to have lost it but he hesitated over the hole for a second before jamming his head and shoulders down, yanking the squealing rabbit out by its back leg. His first catch of the night was killed and mouthed before retrieval, but the rest were brought in immediately and spot on. I think he just needs that first kill before he settles. I'll privately (from him) accept that, but he'll still be told off in case he takes that habit into the second, etc. I was going to step across the railway to my other permission, but I was summoned home for a good reason so I called time after only an hour. My wife hates me taking pics like this on the doorstep, which makes me do it even more LOL. Poor Lewis, he wasn't born to pose pretty. He looks like a self conscious kangaroo. Edited: Pictures added.
