stroller 341
start with an eight week old pup, give it the best food and shelter you can afford, train it carefuly so that you have good re call and that it retieves and waits on command. break it too ferrets dont let it play witht the ferrets just get it used to them. work hard on getting the basics right then depending on the pup start it slowly i like to wait until its at least a year old before i start it fereting just because it will have more patience than a ten month old lamping dog. ferret simple sets and just be on hand to stop the pup worrying the netted rabbit it has to know that once your there the rabbit in the net is out of bounds. the pup itself will learn to mark and stand to cover holes. it can take years of working together to get the dog perfct but generally by the time its three or four years old it will be a rabbitting machine and to be honest you cant buy a dog that has been trained like this. be gentle to your dog but firm your the gaffer but watch him for marking many dogs mark in different ways from an obvious body freeze to a cocked head to touching the hole with his paw. you dont want a dog to huff and puf down a hole dont ever work it with another dog it changes the whole game jealousy and the other dogs habits may rub off and you will end up with allsorts of probs. its a partnership you will learn to understand each others ways and there is nothing like the relationhip you can have with a good ferreting dog. As for breeds i like them mediumheight 20" upwards with a good sprint, whippet blood and collie are good at this job but its up to you. i dont knock lampers but its not really my game anymore so others will advise you better Quote Link to post
sh 08 17
An older dog mite keep the pup in check, if they are trained [bANNED TEXT] there shouldn't be any nastyness. I start the pup off with ferrets at around 4- 5 months so the dog can grow up with the ferrets just in the garden at 1st. i find a pup will always learn off older well trained dogs may be just watching for the first couple of times on a lead. just a few thoughts. a beddy x whippet or that with a greyhound in it, a pure whippet will also be good choice Quote Link to post

stealthy1 3,964
All I did with my present collie x grey lucher is take her to feed the ferrets every day from 8 weeks old until now, she's now 10 months old , as for net training, you just take your dog out and tell it what to do, If mine goes near the nets I tell her to get back and wait, you need to get the basics of training into them before you take them out or you'll have a nightmare of a time Quote Link to post

stroller 341
i have a big numb saluki as well and to see them flying about is a laugh, just lately though she is catching him and then attacks his front legs. it must be a kelpie thing? i know she will catch rabbits now, she is a fast game little dog but she isnt ready in her head yet she is easily distracted. so i will wait until she is right and nobody knows how long that will be, remember her job will be as a ferreting dog....as with all puppies there is no rushing them. good luck with your choices Quote Link to post
