richc12 84 Posted January 13, 2010 Report Share Posted January 13, 2010 having bred my bitch last summer hoping for a bitch pup out of the litter, my decision was made easier as to which one to keep back because she only had 1 bitch out of a litter of 5... this has got me thinking... how many of you lads run a whole litter on to help you continue your line with the RIGHT dogs... breeding worker to worker is a given... but by no means, means you'll end up with the same if you just keep 1.... so when looking for the next gen in your line/ dogs... how many of you run the whole litter on to help you make the right decision... sorry for babbling.. i know what im trying to say.. just unsure if im coming accross ok...lol atb.. rich Quote Link to post

Running 7 Posted January 13, 2010 Report Share Posted January 13, 2010 i kept all the males from my litter last year it was a outcross i hope will be a benifit to my dogs and in order to know for sure i had to keep them all saying that in this day and age keeping your own stuff means you know what they are and where they come from and you cant blame anyone else for how they turn and what you are doing right/wrong Quote Link to post

Sibling rivelry is another factor especialy with terriers, I've found over the years that the only siblings that tend to get on enough to stop you pulling you're hair out is one bitch one dog, just MO and theres always one that you favour more than the other, so this one will get all the attention and the others will suffer for it "socialising". The best thing you can do is pass them on to close trusted friends that will give them the attention they need and if you're out digging with these friends you get to work them as well as having a hand in their entering. I know how you feel, every litter I've bred i tend to keep the worst one !!!. It doesn't matter how long you've been doing terrier work or how many litters you've bred if you can pick the best pup in a litter at eight weeks old then you're a better man than me. The only thing you can do is give them too good friends as I've already said and have a hand in there upbringing and entry, after a while of doing this you'll feel like you've got a massive teem to call on should the need arise and a much bigger gene pool to breed from which all should be properly tried and tested. The only thing you can do is give them too good friends as I've already said and have a hand in there upbringing and entry, after a while of doing this you'll feel like you've got a massive teem to call on should the need arise and a much bigger gene pool to breed from which all should be properly tried and tested. thanks again Busterdog for your advice.... us newcomers can learn far more by asking the right questions and been prepared to listen, than been over kean and blinkered and rushing in regardless... still feel its more difficult than you put it... because as a newcomer...there's only myself and a mate that are into working terriers...so far...how do we keep our stock close to be called upon when needed when we dont have a large group of digging freinds to pass them onto.. obvoius answer is dont breed...buy in your stock...but i know i would find it far more rewarding doing things my way, rather than aquiring dogs from elsewhere chancing that they are what they are said to be... there lies the catch22 situation...
