mr2jan 2
alrite guys, just wondering if my dog will be any good on foxes, hes coming up a year now.ive got a farm where theres a few foxes to be dug,and ive got a terrier finder and a spade lol.but what do i do just introduce him to a hole he goes in rabbit holes and bought me up a rabbit last week,i also have a black and white terrier that has killed a fox above ground.should i stick them in together so my pup dont get bullied, will he take hold of the fox instinctively.or should i find someone who already has working dogs to show him the ropes cheers any advice is better than none. TAZ BOY 4
YOU BETTER GOING WITH SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THE SCORE IF POSS. CAN GET VERY TRICKY. ALL THE BEST WITH IT MATE Quote Link to post
waidmann 105
how old is the pup? will the black and white terrier go to ground? i would ( if the pup is old enough and in your eyes"up for it") let him do the job alone and just use the older dog to confirm the earth is empty( if reliable to ground). if doubling up the dog behind can push the other into the fox,can seal the stop end( suffoacation) the list goes on... i presume you want to work the dogs alone in the future and so would start off that way. good luck and let us know how it goes. p.s. make sure you know how to use the finder reliably before testing it to ground if in doubt there will be someone near you to show you the ropes i'm sure. FightTheBan 1,147
Invite someone onto your ground (that you know and trust) who knows the score, It may seem easy enough, but things can go sour real quick if you dont know what your doing and no one likes digging to a dead dog. My advice would be read a few books, then go and speak to someone who has experience in working terriers. Quote Link to post

FightTheBan 1,147
"stick to rabbiting for f**k sake " Who made you god's gift to terrier work. Christ, weve all got to start somewhere and comments from bellends like yourself can be taken the wrong way by a young lad. At least he came here asking for advice, before going out rattling holes without a scooby. If every young lad getting into this sport sought advice from older, more experienced members of the community we wouldnt have such bad publicity and the for sale section on here wouldnt be jammed with sh!te. mattyg 1,862
probably best to tag along with somone who has a good terrier and see the ins and outs of the whole game.....thats what i do! its not as straight forward as it seems, but can easily be picked up with a few seasons under your belt...im no terrier man at all but i know a few lads that know the score, another thing worth mentioning is to make sure you are completely comfertable using the locator as this can be the difference between a dead dog and a live one. its not all about digging holes either, tidying up is just as important! good luck mate. cheers, matt Quote Link to post
todd 5
If your thinking of working the pup to fox, keep him away from rabbits all together, iv seen other lads with dogs just rippin the p*ss at fox sets cause of early rabbit experiances, dont stick two dogs down a tube use one at a time, prob ur old dog to take the lead unless he has bad habits by now,ul no want the pup going back the way before he goes forward so to speak. atb Quote Link to post
woof woof 3
first i would keep him off rabbits mate if u wont him 2 be a fox dog..then tie him up and let the other terrier work the quarry he will soon wont 2 sink..but leave him tied up...dont let him have a rag..then when hes a little bit older let him see a stop end..take a folk with u..put the folk between him and the quarry..let him bark at it for about 15mins..dispach the fox..then let im have a good rag..even do it again next time..but i wouldnt let him see any more than that...and next let him sink and fined the quarry..good luck with him...woof woof. ginga john 268
All sound advice, mostly, i'm sure, but before you take any of it you may want to read the section at the top of the forum that explains the do's and dont's of working a dog to ground, you wouldn't want to go telling all and sundry what you are doing if you are breaking the arse of a law now would you :whistling: Quote Link to post
events co-ordinator 353
Go on to the National Working terrier federation site and look for a working terrier club near you join it and you will get advice but more important if you do get into bother with a terrier below ground their will be people available to help YIS Quote Link to post
