porkypowell 2
Hi, Father christmass got my wife a treadmill so I have been trying it out with our lurcher. The dog does 6mph for 30 min everyday. It has only been a couple of weeks and I must admit it is a useful tool in maintaing the condition of a dog. I agree its not a substitute for walking/working or my prefered method which is a mountain bike, but during the winter months when its dark when I finish work or if the weather is appalling I can keep the dog in condition. The negative point would be the dog can only walk/trot on it I have tried to increase the speed but the dog finds it difficult to break into a stretch so I feel it is only suitable for stamina and working on the biceps femoris, gluteal, deltiod and tricep muscles. I would not invest £300+ in one just for the purpose of dog conditioning but if there is one in the house give it ago or if one is going free get it. wexford Pa 84
how do you teach them to walk on the mill i just skiped mine as none of mine or me mates dogs would walk on it . Persist with them! None of them will go on it at 1st but after a few days its not a problem.. I can throw mine on it now n do bits n pieces round the kennels without a problem but i never leave them alone on it without been there.. Quote Link to post
wuyang 513
Never new people went to such extremes. WOW. Ok in the right hands i suppose. Personally i don't think it could hold a candle to proper good old fashioned exercise. God is it just me that this has baffled? why oh why Quote Link to post

fresh earth 47
I know a few greyhound trainers who put there dogs on mills and leave them on for a couple of hours at a time the dogs aint half fit but when the dogs only runing a single race per night usualy a 300 yard one so christ only knows why they need so long on the tread mills i have seen dogs that are walked a couple times a day and never see a tread mill do almost a second faster on the same track but its all down to the class of dog Quote Link to post
