i have worked teckel,prt,bloodhounds and all kinds of hpr with jagds and had no problems as all of the dogs were well socialised working dogs(who SHOULD have solid nerves which making them steady to distractions).

 

i know of no breed that will not tolerate other breeds if brought up correctly.

all dogs need watching.if i had a pack of yorkshire terrier i woul not leave them alone around food etc.

 

all of the mystery around the jagd terrier is somewhat confusing to me,its a working bred dog with a good prey drive.bred from fox terriersxmanchester terriers and some other breeds after the war in germany because the working fox terriers were going to pot as showring ponies. nothing more,nothing less.

are ALL patts off their heads and stupid? ALL labs soft as shite? ALL hp water shy? NO they are not.

and neither are ALL jagds "too big for earth work" "phycos" or "kennel nightmares" they are a working terrier which can be used as any other (earth,bushing,blood trailing,retrieving etc etc).

i hope to see some in the uk over the next year or so and hope dearly that they are not used as stud dogs for every tom dick and russel showing half a promise of being a decent dog.

but kept as a true breed to be worked on all quarry(deer,fox, pig). i have no problems with cross bred terriers but feel that the need to cross the jagd is not for the jagds interest.

a jagd-bitch was put in after a fox around here a month ago, she usually bolts foxes, but will stay untill dug if she encounters a badger.

of course there were badgers in there and the bitch got stuck in, with nearly 6 feet of frost the owner could do nothing but wait.

on the sixth day his patience had run out and he called for back-up:

though little dogs, unfortunatly most of the strains up here are a bit to big for earthwork.

its kinda funny actually, the rosettehunters ruined most of the british breeds, while it is the roedeerhunters wich will ruin the german.

we have had to wait a few days(and ruined chainsaws trying to get him) away from raccoons and badgers,untill now all steady dogs on all quarry.just one gear and its forwards

they can take some stick(as most well bred terriers will and should).

nooffence my knowledge of terriers is the same as good chat up lines but why go to hassle of importing a jagd when a decent patterdale in right hands as the potential to do all this.

if your talking of earthwork ok agree but the jagd is more than that

if you look very simple to the jagd and patt is the patt the earthdog and the jagd ,,,he is for everything else

The vocation of the jagdterrier is VERY misunderstood in the UK

maybe but flushing certain animals like whats living near me isnt worth importing a new breed as i feel they will be extinct again soon.

i just feel looking at american sites that the fell terriers dont get utilised as much as they could.

but then again the ban doesnt help matters.

When you say nothing compares with a jadg what type of work are you talking about ?

 

Any type of work , they are bred workers if they are "too big" to enter underground you use them for pigs or any above ground work..... even though I have not yet come across one that doesnt enter fox den . People that own them and breed them are usually hunters and they are almost always bred best worker to worker , by saying that I dont EVER say that other breeds of terriers are not capable of doing what they were made for but with Jagd's alot of BS of show breeding is cut out. Predominantley they are working breed and hopefully will never be a show dog.

 

My dogs are not bigger then 37 cm and I am very confident that they will enter any fox den at any time.

Agreed , it comes down to what an individual person can get out of their dogs. Problem these days is that there is way too many people who expect everything from a dog just because its of a certain breed. I prefer Jagds its my choice , my believe that generally they have more in them then other terriers and its a bit easier for me to work them . But I have to work them if I expect them to be any good. I am also very subjective when it comes to Jagds 'cause I grew up with them .

 

I am sure if people put time and effort into their dogs they will have good workers , there is fair few people here that use all sort of breeds and are very happy with them and are constantly arguing which breed is better , because their own dog is good for them , has it ever occured to anyone that that may be because these dogs are worked. I am sure if I use my Jagds for sporting trials and pets only they will be ruined no matter if they come from good lines , all I am doing is using the advantage of a proven line or lines to harness the dogs into what I want them to do.

So my advice would be dont fight over which breed would be better , blah blah blah get out there work them to their abilities and I'm sure they will be fine.

 

BTW what impresed me the most on this site is when I saw a working Bedlington ( not a breed I thought is used for anything ) congrats to them guys. And to evryone else who is hunting with their dogs .
